So I've had my Tacoma for several years and whenever I needed to carry extra gas or water it was always sliding around in the bed. I decided to solve this by designing a bracket that would mount to the bed rails to keep them from sliding around.

Ever consider making a larger 3-wide unit that would fit across the entire front of the bed? Probably could be a lot of materials / cost savings by doing a unit like that, rather than 3x individual ones.

may the moment only exposed aluminum finish. Keeps it from rusting! Maybe in the future I’ll do a powder coat. You could always powder coat it yourself too.

 

yep it mounts to the bed rails and the weight sits on the bed itself. You could totally drill a hole and attach a cable to the taco jerry logo for security and the cans don’t move in the bracket. No strap needed!

 

Yeah the cost of material and shipping would be insane on a 3 wide unit. If you want to drive to Lynchburg we could weld three together!

that shouldn’t be a problem! It’s think gauge aluminum but you could drill a custom hole easy!

Hey everyone I would really like your help with something. I'm the designer of Taco Jerry and it's still super new to market. Could you tell me all the reasons you haven't grabbed one yet? Is it too extra? Is it non-essential? Is it too expensive?

I need some real market data from your comments on this ideas. Feel free to tear it to shreds or to says it's great.

I'll bite. My questions are 1.) What jerry can does it hold? I'd assume its best to design it around a specific mid range can so that it fits snugly. In past i've had issues finding the correct can for the holder i have. 2.) Is there any provision for strapping in the can? It sounds minor, but i'm sure i could get rowdy enough to send it flying.

My comments are: 1.) Aesthetically i'm not in love with the overly rounded upper corners or the font. I'd recommend playing off details within the bed to make it look more intentional. 2.) It appears to stick out past the wheel arches which i'd assume would create an inconvenience when loading things. Can it be made flush with that opening? 3.) I think a plain aluminum or black finish would be preferential over the brushed look. I feel like thats what most other manufacturers are doing.4.) I dont like the way it doesnt sit flush with the bottom of the bed.

 

To build on that:

1. I love the idea, but without a way to secure the can to the holder it is both able to be picked up and carried away easily, and just unsecured enough that my risk in carrying the can while empty anywhere you may hit a bump at speed, is not zero. (edit to clarify: even just something as simple as chamfered 2"-3" strap points so I could get some kind of tension on them, without cutting the straps up)
   
2. I'd want to understand its internal dimensions, I have NATO Jerry Cans from the late 70s and a can from 2002, and a handful of Sceptre (narrow mouth) water cans that are current production, the dimensions should roughly be the same, but I'd want to make sure it could definitely accommodate either sets of cans
3. I'd wonder if, because the weight is seated on the bed and secured on the racks, flex could become an issue. Making the bed flex under the can in a situation where you're not perfectly flat, necessitating the addition of some kind of EPDM strip(s) on the bottom that will take the minor flex without making squeaky noise, but also arranged in a way that water would still drain around it.
   
4. I'd want to see some kind of coating options, since it's going to be exposed to weather a lot, even under a tonneau
5. Speaking of, I'd want to be sure it works with my tonneau, which is an "on the rail" type, so it LOOKS like it would, but a guarantee would be good too.

Otherwise it's just a bit more expensive than the standard steel jerry can skeletal mounts you see on Amazon or the like, which also include a locking bar. So while I really love this design a lot more than those in which you need to fabricate a mounting system to use the rail, or do something similarly as drastic, the above keeps me from pulling the trigger.

 

Comments:

• Main driving point for me is price. I understand time (both designing and manufacturing) as well as materials all add up quick. But the flip side is most people would probably be looking at 2 or even 3 of these.
• Also as others said some sort of strap or latch to keep the can secure would be a great and essential addition. Although to be honest Im not exactly sure what would be the best and strongest solution. First thoughts are velcro straps just like a RTT. Could also use a cam buckle style strap or even a click style strap, but again I have concerns about how long any of those would last and how they would be attached to the Taco Jerry.
• Interior dimensions should be provided.
• I would actually prefer regular fasteners. Allen key probably.

The good:

• I really like the current design. And the finish. I would think people can grab a can of spray paint if they are looking for black.
• Aluminum is great for us in the northern climates.
• Slotted mounting holes are a good idea too allow for slight variations.

1. The rounded corners is def a personal preference which I understand.
2. It does stick out past the wheel arches but that because of the small bed design. Most jerry can thickness will stick out past the wheel well unfortunately. BY THE WAY IT ONLY STICKS 2 INCHES PAST THE WHEEL WELL.
3. Brushed aluminum allows for a clean finish after the welding and laser cutting. I've added an option for black powder coated now.
4. The bed wall and bed bottom doesn't sit at 90 degrees which is a bad design in my opinion. This means to set it flush on the bed bottom would pull it off the bed wall at least 3 or 4 inches which looks possible worse. The way it sits on the bed also locks it's weight into the plastic bed base in such a way that will prevent sliding.
