VVTI is all based off oil pressure. running heavier weight affects that. the heavier weight (granted 5w-40 shouldnt do this.. but 50 will) can cause the lock pins to sheer

 

Wwwweeeeeeeeaaaaaakkkkkkk lol. PCV on those cars is really bad too, they love to physically eject their rear main, They'd burn more if it worked as it should. Oil burn is normal on a turbo or sc vehicle thats pushed, it comes out the PCV.

 

A vast majority of them are not smart.

 

PCV? i had that wonderful job of replacing the spyder hose system.. it was CLOGGED SOLID when i got the car

and yes. blow by on boost is completely normal

 

Good to know. Might look into other options for her truck then, or at least a lighter weight.

 

just use regular 5w-30 thats all it needs.

Subarus don't burn it so much, they dump it out the valve covers. They're lame as all hell on stock boost, don't think it's enough pressure to load up the PCV system. I burn about a quart every 3k mi. Sometimes less, but when I drive it, it's never relaxed driving.

 

those are rookie numbers. camry 2.4l engines burn a quart in 500 miles!

 

Why do those burn again? Just those weird low friction rings?

 

There's only 2 explanations for that...

 

the first engines to use the 5w-20. the rings seize due to carbon build up. the warranty enhancement with updated pistons fixed it

 

Same reason why camry wheels piss air out of them

 

It took me multiple years to get my brother in the habit of adding oil to his. That poor car also suffered from the melted dash issue.

 

na. thats a camry and 4th gen 4runner thing.. shitty aluminum

 

did he not know toyota was rebuilding those engines for free for years?

Weird. I haven't used a 20wt in anything before. My mom's car takes the weird 0w-16. BMW sells a 0wt-40 for my car, but I'm happy with my Castrol EuroTrash 5w-40 cause it's cheaper and readily available at Wally world or orielly

my 3rd gen avalon they dont have that problem... they just like having leaking steering racks... mine included

 

5w-20 isnt an issue itself. the 2.4 was originally developed around 5w-30. that was the issue.. these newer engines 5w-20 and 0w-16 are all intended from the begining
