gotcha, that's a beefy hook! Sucks toyota doesn't have any kind of decent recovery points from the factory.

The OEM recovery hook is beefy AF cast steel, but it's just a hook and cant hold a shackle, also is only on the passenger side.
IMO the week point in the system in the frame rail. 1/16 boxed steel, it's definitely going to rip before the hook does. Even with a 1/4 inch plate I make inside sandwiching the frame, I feel like I'm going to rip the rail out when using the recovery point.

Hmmm, never knew they came with a recovery hook from Toyota, maybe I threw mine out years ago or never got one.

Save some bucks if you need a full size spare

Yeah the hook on first gens tends to bend the frame up in all kinds of fun positions.

Exactly what I imagined would happen. Haven't had the "pleasure" of experiencing that yet.

Anyone have this happen? My winch has a mind of its own... it sucked itself in and snapped itself... never seen this before and never had an issue... i guess Im going to wire a switch to it now.

Could’ve gotten so cold it decided it wanted to do something. I know electronics do weird stuff when it’s cold or connected to a low battery

this is why I have my winch power running through a disconnect. No key in ignition and switch flipped, no power.

Whered you end up mounting the switch? I have a switch I can use just never installed it. Winch has been on the truck now like 3 years first time this happened. Quite crazy. It bent the recovery point itself. Its obvious it bent the plate no problem. Im just mad I now don’t have a winch unless I tie a bowline in the end in an emergency but the fid should be here saturday and Ill splice it back together.

This is the disconnect switch I used. Mounted in the engine bay, just forward of the battery.

Isn't there a story/post somewhere of an FJ that burned to the ground in the owners driveway from a short. The winch engaged itself and tried to draw the line in till the winch itself overheated and started a fire. The way I see it your lucky the line snapped. And kinda amazing it did given the breaking strength of the line and how much force was applied to do so.. I’d be happy you still have a truck

And you don’t need a fast fid to splice the line, it just makes it easier.
@JLink claims it’s fine with electrical tape.
