LOL I keep looking for ‘em on various places, but they’re hard to come by. Especially MY20 onward.
I don’t plan on lifting the truck or doing any ridiculous off roading so the stock bils are fine; BUT, if I can slap on the pro fox set-up, I’d be all about it.

Make sure your VIN isn’t visible from the exterior and invest in an OBD port locker.
Exactly the same method a locksmith would use.

I wonder - are manual transmission Tacomas without a start button immune from this kind of theft?

    No.
Keys still need to be programmed to the ECU to start the ignition. Metal blanks will not start the truck.
What they do is take a pic of the VIN - cut a key - open the door - plug into the OBD, program the key - drive away.
You can [basically] program any blank FOB to the ECU.
As an example.. I’m using a honda style flip key for mine, just put a Toyota sticker on the blank.

I have to violate my poor old truck with a key to start it.

You dont know how many times I have pushed the 4x4 selector to try and start it.:anonymous: I am so used to push start now with the wife's CR-V

Yup! If they can’t see it, they can’t cut a key for it.
Theft is a routine. Your best line of defence is adding time and hurdles to their routine. They might see no VIN and move on, cause your neighbours will be exposed.
In the case where they get into the truck..
    OBD locker..
    A21E53F9-C853-4E55-925F-8BCDC8CDB0EC.jpg

Now, if they REALLY want the vehicle, they’ll get it one way or another (tow truck).
Personally, if they got my truck, they can have it, let insurance handle the rest. I’ll do my best to protect against the theft though.

I believe the best way is a ignition kill switch. Can do a inline switch to the fuse panel for the ignition (atleast for 2nd gens).

it’s just a deterrent like you said. If the thief's want it they’ll take it. If my truck was stolen I would be loosing out on a lot. Would suck.

@Norilsk , could you please check this battery and see if its compatible with trucks? my battery does not charge anymore, costco does not have marine in stock.

PS: i am also choosing a group 31 too because sometimes they still fit on my truck with or without changes.

or this one? this one is dual, the other is not dual. I have no idea what dual means...

Not planning to lift it very much. Planning to put 285/75/16s on it for work around home. I expect there’s a ton of discussion to be had on whether those tires will rub.

Try and stay away from lift kits with spacers. I have 4 inch and front end is stiff. I feel a lot of bumps at high speed city driving. If I was doing it over, I wouldn't go that route. Do the lift through suspension is me 2 cents.

This man knows what he is talking about! He has had the dirty dirty lift, and knows it is not the best way. :spy:

I agree with Tony, only way to lift taco for greatness is with suspension. Then some other small things when you attempt 37's:welder: :sawzall:
