Not very happy with snow performance

No, really?

 

Gonna have to say.. if you wanted snow driving experience, there's plenty to be had just about thirty miles east on I90. And by the time you get to Snoqualmie, it's ski and tons of snow time.

 

What kind of tires on your dad’s jeep? If it went up your hill easily, buy what he has. I agree it’s tires.

Adding some weight in the bed is great too, the 4x4 extended cab is very light back there. When my old snow tires were worn down, I did that and it helped a lot. I have new snows last winter, they work great. BTW, the old snows were from 2002.

My Tacoma has no abs but it does have a slow speed rear axle electric lockup, max 5 mph if I remember correctly.

Buddy had a first gen 2WD 4 banger in northern Maine, winter tires and that thing was a beast in the snow. Your tires are junk. (I am saying this with the stock 3rd gen TRD OR tires, they're also mediocre at best in the snow).

 

I'll chime in on the on the tires and experience bandwagon. I have a feeling that driveway is steeper than the video makes it look, so a standing start is probably an issue. I learned to drive in Western NY and always had a compact front wheel drive car with all season tires. It's quite flat there, so I could routinely get through 6-8 inches of snow without too much difficulty, but I think I would find that too stressful now in my old age. Since moving to New England, where we have hills and ice, I have sworn by snow tires on the honda civic, which my wife drives.

With the tacoma, I just have fairly new Toyo highway tires with good tread depth and haven't had any issues. I only use 4hi if the roads are bad, and don't have any weight in the back. I think any decent A/T tire with siped lugs would be an improvement. Low budget, firestone destination a/t is popular around here; high budget, michelin a/t. KO2 doesn't have a a good reputation for ice.

 

What's with the K02? I just bought a set and they seemed to be much better on the ice(I did have street tires on previously)

 

I honestly don't know. In my research of a/t tires with good winter performance, poor ice performance was an observation that I came across fairly frequently. I think new tires are probably almost always better than old tires, if anything due to the age of the rubber.

I just purchased Falken AT3W’s with the snow flake rating right before we got 18” of snow here in Chicago... and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Night n day from the stock Toyo A30’s. Zero slipping!

 

I keep hearing good things about those. Was hoping to get a comparison with Toyo A/T IIIs this season but looks like adaptation is a little slow

 

I know the Toyo’s don’t have the 3mtn peak snow flake rating, but heard good things about them too. Prices are Same too give/take a few bucks.

 

... it looks to me you are starting off with no momentum , up hill. The bit of slush, ice or so wedged in under your tire/tires act as a "wheel chock". We use "wheel chocks" all the time at our loading docks. Keeps the trailer/truck from rolling forward and away from the loading dock. Easy to drive over the wheel chocks but not from a dead stop. Back up, sometimes just a few inches and get a bit of forward momentum to clear/roll over. You may have to stop and get out of vehicle (ugh) to look at exactly what tire has the worst issue. That one tire facing a "bigger wheel chock block " than the others ?? Grab a shovel and chip it out/away. Of course by backing up you may be putting your wheels in a worse position and in more trouble. Thus G.O.A.L. Get Out And Look. ... Drive safe my friend.
