Got my twin arb installed over the weekend.

 

Thought I share for those who would like to add a reserve tank.

I been using an old steel craftsman 3 gallon tank and have been on a lookout for an aluminum tank. Came upon this offerup Audi air suspension accumulator tank. Turns out they are common along the Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche suv suspension design that are known to have expensive problems. People are switching out to spring suspension and junkyard seem to not be able to sell these for much. Which is a good alternative for us oba folks compared to the arb one. Probably not gonna be cheap for long after there is a demand for them.

the one I got is 1.25 gallons and rated for like 200 psi. Only problem is that it only have one port so I can’t have a tank drain. Can eventually weld one on but being aluminum I’m not too worried.

I switch out the line from metric to 1/4. It was a tight fit but works.

 

Do you know what models of those makes I should look for in my local U-Pull it?

I have a TIG and can weld aluminum, so I'm keen on getting my hands on one of these tanks.

Yup, just surfed through there. Sweet find. I did a quick search through our local pick n pulls and think I found two cars that might hold a tank.

If I have time next week, I may run out and look.

Please forgive my ignorance, so, it's a T fitting into the tank, compared to the ARB one side in, one side out air lines? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to having a reservoir/bladder style. Might a water seperator be installed like a drip leg? Thx!

 

I been running one line in/out of the craftsman tank like what is shown on the aluminum tank and it’s been fine. The air is channel to a manifold which the quick connect and air compressor is routed to. In the end the air will travel to where ever the pressure drop is and won’t be a problem finding that path.

I’m surprise the arb doesn’t have a drain. I thought it did since arb state it has two fittings. Good to know I may not need one after all. Can just drain it every now and then to gain back air volume.

yes I agree but most will say that since it’s a pressure vessel, you need to be a certified welder for pressure stuff for safety reasons.

 

Fair enough. As an uncertified pressure vessel welder, you wouldn't be under the scrutiny of the legal system if you welded your own gear if were to pop. Now sell one, and that changes things.

Dangerous if it fails, yes. But a 1 to 2 gallon aluminum tank with 100psi of compressed air isn't the same as 2000psi of compressed toxic or explosive gas.

Just like anyone else that welds anything supporting their truck suspension, motor mounts, roof racks, bumpers, campers, or trailers that see highway use. I think the risk is more controlled than any of those.

 

I use a paintball tank for nail guns at work so I added an 8mm QD on a hose to the center console manifold. I’m planning to relocate my compressor & tank and need a temporary substitute. It can also serve as a backup air supply since it’s a similar volume of air to the 2 gallon tank. I have an HP compressor for small volume refills at home. The regulator output is modified down below 150psi. A 12v ball valve is on order since typical solenoid valves only hold pressure in one direction and still leak in the other.

Where did you route the output line? I was thinking about a 2 gallon tank as well

 

I put the tank right above the muffler, bolted to the underside of the bed and this in the frame....

 

Excited to finish phase 1 of the twin arb install today. Working as advertised.

 

I just finished up my install on a Slee mount to the overhead console. I'm starting to gather data in regard to using the Ch4x4 Small Toyota switches to power up the front and rear lockers.

Have any of you electrical gods wired up the ARB locker wiring harness to the Ch4x4 locker switches? The switch 1 & switch 2 have different color wires. I was able to figure out the Isolation switch(power to the compressor) with the help of the interwebs. Not a ton of info for the actual locker switches.

Does anyone know if the 3rd gen Tacoma slee arb mount that on passenger side near firewall would work on the second gen Tacoma. Trying to figure out if the mounting holes are the same between the 2.
