Well, If you already think it is sluggish it will definitely be worse to you. I always felt the motor was fine but like I said I don’t drive fast I have a car for that. I also do not tow so I don’t notice it either. Also, like mentioned you could do a reflash a.k.a. tune Which everyone says seems to make a huge difference

I wouldn't say it's sluggish now but I'm just curious how other's experience has been. I do have the 4.0 so I think it would be less noticeable, and tuning really isn't an option for the 2nd gen.

I went from 265/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks that were 46.5 lbs to the 275/70/17 Wildpeaks that are 57 lbs. Also at the same time I went from 23 lb wheels to 30 lbs wheels. So a 17 lb increase all around. I definitely felt sluggishness which is to be expected with that kind of weight gain. However I just got OVTune a few days ago and it’s made a huge difference in the way the truck drives. The sluggishness is totally gone, amazingly.

275/70/17 is a great size as a middle ground for larger tires. Beefier look that doesn’t require a CMC. However most of the options in this size that have aggressive tread are very heavy at 55+ lbs.

I appreciate the response, for the setup I want it would also be a 17lb increase all around but I think having the 4.0 engine wouldn't make it so bad, but on the other hand I don't have access to an OVtune. When you talk about sluggish can you provide an example?

    thanks

just real slow off the line, and lots of gear hunting. It could be a 3rd Gen thing though, hard to know what your experience would be on a 2nd Gen.

Yeah it's hard to say since the gear hunting is not a problem with 2nd gens. I am possibly thinking of going 255/75/17 which I think would make the tire lighter and help with the sluggishness, hard to say for sure. I wish I could test out a few tires on the truck and see how I like the look and ride.

I debated 255/80/17 which were a few lbs lighter but decided to go with the wider tire look. I’m guessing the Methods you’re looking at are 30 lbs. is that heavier than your current wheels?

Yeah, they are heavier by 8lbs. Currently have the stock Off-road 2nd gen wheels which are 22 pounds.

Yeah the wheel weight increase will have an impact too, as I found out.

Yeah I could imagine but I'm just really wanting to feel it first hand on my truck and decide. I won't be adding steel bumpers or a tent or anything so I don't think it will be too bad. Probably will just go this route and after a week won't really feel like it's that sluggish since I'll be used to it.

I think that’s the right way to look at it. After all, we’re driving trucks and they will drive like trucks! I think you’ll be happy with the size. And the Wildpeaks are great tires - liked them a lot in both sizes I’ve had.

I agree, I was looking at K02's and wildpeaks but I just am more interested in the wildpeaks after reading reviews and comments on them. Really like the look at the performance seems great plus I think they are lighter.

Wildpeaks in 275/70/17 are actually slightly heavier than KO2s, by about 1.5 lbs.

Despite the higher weight I chose the Wildpeaks since I had them in the 265 size and loved them, so was more comfortable with that switch.

No need to mess with gears, however...because you are increasing rim and tires sizes, gas milage will take a small hit...and also, you might get some rubbing on fender wall and mud flaps if you have them.

Hey fellas, I'm looking at putting a 2" OME lift on my 2016 SR5 and wondering if I could squeeze 275/70/r17 on without any rubbing. It's a work truck so I'm not doing crazy offroading or anything so if there's any way I could squeeze in 275s maybe with certain offset/backspacing and/or 16 inch rim, though ideally 17. If it would rub mud flaps at like full turn/full compression, that fine I can do that cutting down the line when/if I do trails. Let me know what you think or any other suggestions

I took all mud flaps off the only thing I still haven’t done is CMC which I would prefer not to do. 2.5” to 3” of lift so I’m sure I’ll be good. How big is the hit to MPG’s?

Rub varies from truck to truck; I have a 2" OME lift and rubbed a bit at 275/70R17 even after swapping out UCAs on 4runner SEMAs w/ 4mm offset.

You may see a 2- 4 mile decrease.

I did a 2-2.5" lift with reasonable tires for the truck. MPG change is small, <1mpg so far over the last 2 months
