I have been thinking about the same thing. I'm looking into the KG-UV9D instead. Easier to get and also full duplex.

S&G think it’s worth it? I’m contemplating setting up this and a mic, stuffing everything in my center console. I really only use my radio(s) for road trips and off roading. I have a 3ft fire stick off tail light mount for CB which, if this road trip in March proves that to be worthless then I’m probably pitching the whole system. Just want something a little bit more intricate without going over the top for the baofeng/future actual gmrs radios.

Nagoya UT-72 mag mount with sma adapter works great. I still use it with my TM-V72A actually.

I ended up ordering a UV9D after watching Ham Radio Concepts on YouTube successfully work several satellites with one. Can’t beat saving money and availability.

That costs more than my radio

I’m aiming for a bit more budget than that (I know). I was hoping to get the cheap antenna I linked and the baofeng mic. I need to get a usb charging connection. I was thinking about getting one of the radioditty gs5bs since it can be charged via usb and does all the baofeng stuff and then some. But I’ll probably just get one of those extendo batteries for the baofeng instead or something. I have one of the battery eliminators I might see if I can rewire that to usb instead and could just stuff that into the center console with everything.

The battery life on my UV-82HP is absurdly good. Like you probably wouldn't even need to charge it if you were out for a few days. I keep a spare in my work bag with our freqs in it and I honestly cannot remember the last time I charged it. Probably not even in 2021 yet

yeah there’s an Amazon special combo pack - extra life battery, charging cables, chirp cable, and mic! Might grab that and the mag antenna.

I had my UV5R plus (awwww yissss it’s red!) on a road trip through Vermont and around the middle of day 4 it started getting shy on battery, that was just the stock one.

if I can get a way to charge up instead I’d prefer that instead of having something connected to the trucks power.

Basically just being more intricate than I need to be. As said - the radio as is handles everything I need and then some. Just getting more toys.

Seems like a solid plan. A nice antenna system will allow you to do most of what a mobile system will do anyway, just in a different package [and with a lot less wattage, but still]

This weekend decided to improve my antenna. Originally had a 10ft pole at the peak. I added a 27ft telescoping pole in a 5ft tripod. The tip of my base antenna is 49ft above ground level and the feed point of the inverted dipole is at 39ft agl.

This has greatly improved reception. Did some net check ins this morning, everyone said we were booming. We were able to confirm signal into the parts of Mexico my parents are normally around.

On 40m contacts in Boise and La Paz just now. Woot!

Have a mag mount antenna coming in for my baofeng for the truck, but when that's not in use I might try to set it up on my file cabinet in my office at home. Joined a radio club, I can get the repeater but it's meh. Hope setting it up on my file cabinet gets enough to be better. Don't want to go all out.

PS if anyone wants a baofeng - this plus an external antenna (I have the $10 one I posted earlier coming in the mail soon, but there are better ones) and you've got a pretty good setup!

The NA771 18" or the 40" aubree makes a good handheld antenna for those as well.

 I know what you mean, but in my application at least, "handheld" would be "in the cab of the truck" I just pictured someone with a 40" antenna fumbling around inside the cab :D

I think @BadDNA has an 18" antenna on his baofeng though, or at least not the stock rubber ducky.

I just had to drop $1K on an aviation headset for work. Is there any way I can use that thing for ham radio when I am not working?

Yeah I have seen those. Pretty cool setup, especially if you're out hiking/riding or something. I'd say it's overkill for me but hell, even having a radio is overkill I guess so why not keep going :D

They're pretty cheap if I remember correctly.

This one here is 15 bucks, don't know about the quality of the build to be fair.

I think my in-laws have the same tiles in their kitchen.
