My gut instinct is the onboard will be sustantially cheaper. But that's assuming there is no adverse effects from idling your trucks engine dozens of hours at a time. It doesn't seem like that's a great idea, but idk.

My 3500W invertor will power the fridge, one or two heater blowers, some lights and charge my phone's. It ain't gonna run 12 tons of AC tho, lol.

Thats the other thing I'm looking at. I've got a couple pelican cases, and I could probably build 200Ah of capacity in each of them. Time to make a spreadsheet.

Does anyone know what amperage the F150 generator produces? Is it 20, 30?

    2kW version is about 16A
    2.4kW is about 20A
    7.2kW is about 60A

Thanks. Looks like you would go 30 amp to the fuse box, but I'm no electrician.

Edit: probably wire a 50 amp transfer switch and use a drop down if you just had the 2.4 kw unit. That would allow an upgrade to a 50 amp whole house later maybe.

You can use the F-150's generator as your personal electric utility in two ways. In the most elegant scenario, you'd run a cable from the 30-amp, 240-volt outlet in the bed to a 30-amp transfer switch and directly power selected circuits in your house.Jan 9, 2021

My Champion 3000 inverter is as quiet as a honda for less than half the price. If your fancy ford runs out of fuel in three days where are you getting more fuel for it? My genny runs about three gallons a day but not my whole house when armageddon comes I only want my fridge and chest freezer to run to extend my survival odds. Lights at night bring the roaches towards your place looking to pilfer!

Then it isn't for you. The people they had in mind, mainly, were those who were wasting bed space with generators they would bring to their job sites. Said generators are also prone to being stolen. You aren't going to buy it because, "I happen to need a generator; let's go get a truck."

Kerosene heater and a small 2000 watt generator could get you by if needed. Freezers and refrigerators don’t need to be plugged in and running very much at all if left closed. The biggest problem would be water just to flush the toilet.

Some guy in alaska had a harbor frieght generator that sounded like it was about to launch a rod through the case. I could hear it all over the campsite, for 3 days. Lame.

Counterpoint, it really doesn't fit OPs application either.

Not if he's merely talking about needing it every once in a while "just in case."

I live in an area of So Cal where they shut off our power every time the wind blows. I have been running a Westinghouse i4500 dual fuel. I run propane only and it starts every time and is super quiet. I believe Generac makes it now.

Its only 120v so it can't run the HVAC. Our last outage was super cold, not Texas cold but enough that I ordered a Cummins 20kw with auto switch. It will be deliveredTuesday.

I don't think an attached vehicle would be a good solution especially with a multi day outage.

I really want to get a Westinghouse AP1000, but the red tape is a nightmare.

The one thing that really gives me pause is if you are using a vehicle to power your house then the proverbial "keys are in the ignition", idling, while you sleep at night. Insurance doesn't pay if it's stolen while energized. They call it owner assisted theft.

The other argument is that even during disaster people still need to go to work. What happens to the spouse at home if you have to drive your power station to work every day?
