It’s snowing so much that the rotors aren’t able to take many/any missions. Those of us in the fixed wings have been flying quite a bit. We took two out of our ER today. Fixed wing medevac in whole state has been flying constantly.

    y’all stay safe out there.

I was going to post this in the PM where the conversation started, but I guess I'll do it here, because I feel like what I'm about to say is rare enough that it should be said publicly.

Ben was right about expensive camera lenses.

I've been in the process of getting a new camera (for reasons), which has necessitated new glass as well. I started with an f/4-6 walk-around zoom (24-240mm) which is GREAT, but found that I missed the functionality of my old 10-18mm (16-27mm equiv) for wide angle shots. The only wide angle available for the new camera was a pro-level lens and so I hesitated, since it cost an order of magnitude more than the 10-18.

Anyway, after waiting nearly a month for it on backorder, I just got it. Holy crap, this thing can take handheld shots essentially in the dark with fast shutter speeds. Damn, what have I been missing?

OK, that's it. Ben, I'm never complimenting you again unless you're more right about something than this. It's a high bar. :luvya:

Funny, I’m considering getting a new camera and a couple lenses as well. I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to lenses, so I’m relying on a local friend to tell me what to get. But he does a mix of everything, not just vehicle and landscape photos which 99% of my photos.

Right now I’m looking at the Canon 90D with a Tamron 18-400mm f3.5-63 and a Canon 50mm f1.8 based on his recommendations.

That’s what I learned from the little research I’ve done of the 50. Although I have no idea when I’d use it over a zoom. I guess it’s just one of those things that I’ll learn as I use it.

As for the 18-400, I don’t plan on doing bird photography. It’s just what I was recommended if I wanted a “do everything lens”. However I have zero experience with any lens other than my 18-55 kit lens from my Nikon D5100.

Thank you for your insight, btw. I’ll take all the help I can get! Haha

Thanks for the info! I think I might just get a standard lens like a 15-85 from Canon (not the kit lens one) and then rent a wide angle and prime lenses and do exactly like you said. I always forget the whole rent option is out there.

Definitely don’t apologize. You may have just saved me from spending ~$700 on lenses I don’t need/like.

90D is a great camera. Or, the 80D that I've been using for the last 4 years was, so I assume the 90D is as well. I think I'd have been VERY happy with a 90D instead of what I ended up with.

In fact, I would have ended up with a 90D if I had only run over my body and hadn't run over my favorite lens as well.

For the 90D, the best all-around lens IMO is the 18-135 USM lens from Canon. Monte @Blackdawg turned me onto this lens, and it is truly amazing. Crisp through the zoom range, and yet compact. Heavy due to lots of good glass, but not uncomfortable to carry. I used it for 90%+ of my photos (according to Lightroom) over the last several years. The USM AF motor is fast/good as well. Plus, it's not all that expensive.

The final straw was seeing photos that some of my wheeling buddies took with their Canon beginner kit and seeing the unedited JPEGs turn out way better than any of my photos. I was originally planning on an 80D, but the extra megapixels of the 90D is what is pushing me over to spend the extra money. I think that combined with a better quality lens will help with the amount of sharpness I feel is always lacking in my photos.

After the last couple of hours of research it was tied between the one you linked and the Sigma 17-50 f2.8. But since both you and Monte highly recommend the Canon lens, it provides more range, and it's also cheaper then I think I'll go with that one.

I really appreciate the help. I know that you don't always want to just tell people what gear you have as it's better for people to learn what they like/dislike. I know that new gear isn't all it takes to get good photos, but I'm hoping that it'll alleviate some of my frustrations with my almost 8 year old beginner camera with kit lens. I definitely will have no excuses if I have better and similar gear and still can't produce photos as well as you guys! Haha

Photography gets a little complicated after you step passed the point and shoot cameras, atleast for me.

but I think it’s worth it, we’ve basically built a business off of

My interest in photography seems to come in waves. I feel like when I get some good photos and it has a story behind it I really enjoy it. But those days when all of mine come out bad due to terrible lighting or something else I get really discouraged. Just need to push through and learn some new styles of photography.

Oh I definitely don’t care about the brand, as long as it’s a good value for the money. I just hope I like switching from Nikon over to Canon. I have yet to meet anybody through family or friends that uses Nikon, so we’ll see.

    Hello from NH!
I just skimmed this last page, cool info on lenses, I have a sony a6000 mirrorless that i have been thinking about getting a new lens for. Never though there were places that rent lenses out to try, pretty cool.

So I am planning my first ever trip to WY in the fall. I will be driving out for a short vacation and then picking up a buddy at the airport for an antelope hunt. we bought points last year and have already gotten some good private access to land as well as BLM that is blocked by private. As of now it looks like we will be in the Casper area for the hunt, though I may hit Jackson hole area and up to Yellowstone for the vacation portion. Any of ya'll hunters or hunt around that area? Tips? Must see areas? remarkable restaurants or breweries or camping spots?

If you're moving to a crop canon the best every day walk around lens by far is the 18-135mm. Get that.

Plus tax glass autofocus can suck ass too or be slow as hell.

400mm is way long. A Canon 100-400mm l lens would be better if you want a super zoom with a wide range.

What your (wife's) sigma 35mm prime? :luvya:

Sigma is solid glass for sure.

Did you get the canon 16-35 II? Cause everything iver heard about it is that the best part is how little barrel distortion there is.

Also I just want to point out that I've been giving you shit for hand holding shots at 1/4sec for ever haha fast glass is definitely the best answer to that problem. But now you can pump the iso a lot more too confidently

My tuning career will be short lived if my neighbors kill me. Cold start tune is written... Also needed to rest some other shit. Headphones or decent speakers recommended lol

Backend flashing through the MHD app. I can't build a tune on the fly but I can modify on my computer and send it to the BMW in about 2mins. The app does data logging too which is helpful. Would you believe that the exhaust in the car is totally tame, it's quieter than my cruiser and taco inside. But outside I've set off coworkers car alarms and if the windows are down its plenty roudy. High compression engines are pretty intense sound wise.

I suppose that makes sense as the cab is probably properly insulated being a near luxery spec car haha

That's pretty cool and fun. How's the taco ECU wiring going?
