So, 2 failures for 2018 that we know of. o_O That's still a very tiny percentage considering they make hundreds of thousands of these trucks every year.

I wouldn't involve a lawyer at this point. The truck is still under warranty and the legal fees would far surpass the cost of a new truck.

Take what you can get from corporate preferably an extended warranty out of good faith and perhaps consider trading in the truck for something else or a new one. The dealer/corporate wants to repair the issue they just have a process to follow and don't want to pay for anything they don't have to.

All the more reason to ask for a warranty extension from corporate. By the way, any dealer work should be covered for a specified term on your service receipt. Usually, 1 year/ or set amount of miles, whichever comes first.

I'm curious about the final outcome. Hopefully it will be shared and something positive will come out of it.

How would you like me to provide proof? I LL my 2018 for a TSS issue. It took 4 months of time but I got everything handled thru mediation and got every dime back for everything, including insurance payments. Only thing I didn't get back was gas.

Yes, Toyota recommended intervals. The truck was at 40K miles, so all maintenance up to 35K was included with Toyota Care

    CONCLUSION

Re: The engine issue - it seems like they fixed it, for now. Dealer was driving the truck around a bit. They stuck with the coolant on the injector wires story.

But I was more or less determined to not drive this truck anymore. Two breakdowns too many. Too many crucial parts coming off and back on. I like Baja. I like snowy mountains. I like ambitious road trips. Reliability is #1 for me. Took some advice in this thread and first sought to resolve the issue at the dealership level before going corporate. Called the Service Manger. Called the General Manager. Negotiated a trade-in price that made sense to me. Drove away an identical 2021 on Friday. Dealer also paid to have my shell transferred to the new truck.

The driver's side power seat is a huge bonus. Also Apple Car Play.

Thanks everyone for your input. Appreciate it.

Just a comment on the lemon law thing, most states require the vehicle to go into the dealership a certain number of times for the EXACT same problem. The same problem, not the same symptom (not always one in the same). Ive owned alot of cars as has my immediate family. Through all manufacturers, we've had the best luck with once the first warranty repair doesn't fix the problem we take it to another dealer of the same brand for a second opinion. They normally either fix the problem or point out the misdiagnose or faulty repair of the first dealer so I have some ammo to make them fix it. That being said ive worked in dealerships since 2005 and have hardly ever seen legal battles or lemon law attempts go into the consumers direction without ALOT of heartburn.

Glad to see you got it sorted out.
Didn't see it mentioned, might have missed it.
The truck has a 5 year 60K powertrain warranty. So the engine repair is/was on them.
In California, by law, any repair done at ANY licensed repair facility has a 12 month 12K warranty.

Glad you got your issues behind you now, and I believe you made the right decision for your circumstances.
TOYOTA must have done something right because you decided to stay with them for another ride. They are good quality, and stand by you when thing go south.

Moreover, they rate high on 2021 Consumer Report card of best vehicles.

My local dealer tried to sell me my 16 didnt have a powertrain warranty on it, just the 3/36. I ended up trading the truck in so I didnt press the issue. 4wd actuator acted up intermittently.

Glad you got into something you can trust

May I ask how the negotiation went with trading in for a new truck?

Not sure what specifically they consider powertrain, but the actuator may not be powertrain, in which case it would only have 3/36.

Yeah I get that, but they flat out told me it had no powertrain warranty.
