Have you ever seen an Officer try and grab all the fleeing Illegal Aliens when they bail out of a vehicle? It reminds me of a game show contestant in one of those money blowing cubicles, trying to grab all they can.

Found this tonight, I don't recall EVER talking to the media:

    Pinal growth strains deputies

    Elias C. Arnold
    The Arizona Republic
    Jun. 7, 2006 12:00 AM

A Pinal County sheriff's deputy listened patiently as a Santan area mother sat on the edge of her living room couch demanding to press harassment charges and promising to file a lawsuit.

The woman was upset because another mother called her vulgar names and yelled at her over the phone in connection with sexual assault allegations the woman's daughter made against a boy she knew from school.

"You guys are here to protect us, but you're not protecting us," the woman told Deputy Curtis Holloway. advertisement[IMG][IMG]

It is a sentiment that frustrates Holloway, and reflects a changing dynamic in unincorporated areas like the Santan area.

With its neat rows of new stucco tract housing and brand-name stores like Fry's and Subway, the area could easily be mistaken for a growing city. But failed incorporation efforts in the past couple of years have left residents without police, fire and other services normally provided by a city.

The woman's case probably lacks any likelihood of conviction and is a "prime example" of the area's changing demand for service, said Holloway, a stocky man with close-cropped black hair and a cheerful attitude.

The traditional resident of an unincorporated area would handle this situation on his own, but people moving from a city to the unincorporated area in search of more affordable housing are more willing to call the Sheriff's Office for relatively minor incidents, said Holloway, a five-year veteran of the department.

"That's almost offensive to us," he said of the accusation deputies are not protecting the public. "It's almost a direct insult to our persons."

As a rookie, Holloway's first assignment was the Queen Creek and Santan area because it was slower than other regions and was a good training ground for new deputies.

Today, it is one of the busiest areas in Pinal County, averaging 1,200 to 1,500 calls for service each month, according to Pinal County Sheriff Chris Vasquez.

The 2006 Pinal County map Holloway carries fails to include some of the area's newest roads, and the radio is frequently flooded with deputy traffic.

Holloway said he spends most days going call to call, leaving little time for patrol and traffic enforcement.

Still, Holloway said he feels he has the tools to do a good job and tries to keep a positive outlook.
