So I am thinking about picking up this topper from a guy on CL. It looks like its in good shape and the price is right. He is not sure if it came off of a regular or ext cab because it was never mounted. It looks as though it will fit my regular cab and I like the design.

Now the question is, who makes it? Its an older model from whomever but the rear lid struts don't work so I will need new ones and would like to know who to order from. Also in case I need any mounting hardware or anything. So help me out!

at first glance it looks like it would fit an xtra cab best. (notice the angle near the cab? Reg cabs have a nearly vertical window, while xtra cabs have more of an angle.) idk what brand it is

I picked up a used A.R.E. last month for super cheap and though it wasn't perfect for my truck, as long as the perimeter fits on your bed rails you are good to go. Get the mesurements and c if it will fit. You'l be very happy with it if you buy it.

    Good luck!

So here's the question then; the bed dimensions between an xtra cab and reg cab are identical. The only difference is the cab angle (4 reg and 10 xtra). So will the top hit the cab before it gets completely flush with the cab side of the bed? This, of course, would lead to mass amounts of leaking into the bed which I would like to avoid.

It will be fine I've got a extended cab topper on my reg cab and it works fine you just have to leave your bedliner in and it will let you slide the topper almost all the way up without hitting the cab but you may still have a small over hang on the tailgate side

There's no way to tell for sure without test-fitting it. Different manufacturers' shells sometimes had different contours.

Some XtraCab shells were designed to so closely match the XC rear cab wall slope that they'll clash with / butt into a Regular Cab's rear wall.

Others will just have a noticeably odd 'gap'.

Yeah, I'm torn really because I like things to look uniform and if this thing fits funny it will drive me nuts. I might pass it up and keep searching; something will have to turn up eventually. So far all I can find is double cab and extended cab tops that are within 3-4 hours of my place.

I thought about perhaps buying it and then taking an angled section out and reducing the angle then glassing it back together, but a body shop friend of mine advised against it.

I'd say if the cap is close enough to you, just cruise over and see how it fits. Bring a buddy and throw it up there to have a look. Make sure you protect your bed rails though cause the littlest speck of dirt will scratch your paint (ask me how I know :() The worst that could happen is that you don't like how it looks and you don't buy it. If the price is right its def worth a shot.

I would advise against altering the top also.

So I ended up saying nadda to that topper and went with one a bit farther away and a bit more expensive. But its exactly what I want and comes with the Yakima rack mounted. Colors wrong but I don't care.

    Thanks for everyone's advice though.

If the price is right, I'd snag it up. You can always resell later if need be. Besides, the least you can do is check if it fits nice. Looks like its in great shape man! Nice find!

I had several different camper shells on my 1997 regular cab Tacoma. The two extended cab versions did NOT work. I finally had to drive 9 hours to get a used regular cab shell (got it for a steal). Also, the extended cab shells (even if they "fit") will need to be slid towards the rear of the truck. A lot of times it makes a good water-tight seal difficult, if not next to impossible.

After owning two Tacomas and 4 camper shells, I will tell you to opt for the one built for your truck and not try to half-ass one on there.

    Just my opinion.

And thats what I did, thanks for the advice though. The red one above is for a regular cab Tacoma.
