So why does Toyota sell the Tacoma with the ECU tune that it does?

Appreciate that offer, it's not a horrible experience with the manual by any means. I think of more as squandered potential.

The biggest thing I noticed is my rev-hang was obnoxious before I did the update. It is still there but not nearly so bad. Outside of that I see little difference myself.

All because they care more about mpg’s than driving experience.

I bought a truck but I still want some performance. Waiting on the 18+ OVT HH update to be released.

I have a 2021 got in October and have just over 5k on it after a 3k road trip out did not hunt for gears or shift any different than my second gen... I will still be installing the OV 91 tune though due to difference in throttle response. my wife can't stand the lag is not linear at all! Hopefully the OV will change this because the sprint booster only helped it off the line it feels

Just flashed to 2.0 and now I enjoy driving my truck. Before that it was a gutless wonder.
I was seriously thinking of Trading it in for an F250. I love the size and versatility of the Tacoma and now the drivability is what I consider acceptable.

I have no idea how the licensing for OVTune works. Can you pay someone to flash your truck, or so you have to buy the software?

Pay a small amount to someone willing to flash your truck.

That statement is incorrect CAFE standards don't care how many you sell of which vehicle. They only care about taking all the cars in your fleet represented by only 1 of them and averaging the fuel economy of them. So it doesn't matter if X car manufacturer sell all but 1 of their vehicles as a gas guzzling hot rod and the 1 is a hybrid the combination of however many vehicles is in their line up makes up their CAFE combined MPG not the #of vehicles sold of each vehicle in the fleet.

We are missing a large part of the tune, and its for this completely outdated and bullshit EPA driving test.

This is why just about every car today has a dead throttle for 3/4 of its travel. Its intentionally tuned to make it very sensitive to throttle inputs for the driving test, despite the fact that the test doesn't represent anything close to reality.

Every manufacturer attempts to game the system and that's why every car benefits from a real world tune.

Humans instinctively push the pedal to go, and when it doesn't react linearly, we push further, until we hit the kick down switch.

Its a terrible design, but intentional to meet the fictional driving test.

This is even worse with the advent of turbo engines, which do well on the test for EPA but do shit in real world driving. The 3.5 ecoboost engine looks better on the test than the 5.0 cayote, but in real world with real humans the 5.0 gets better fuel economy. This is because the instant you get into boost the fuel economy numbers are long gone. The cars are tuned to keep the car out of boost on the EPA test, regardless of real world implications.

We need a new way to test gas mileage, but we shouldn't hold our breath.

A good tune can transform a car, and you can still get excellent fuel economy, but more power needs more fuel so a tune can also reduce your gas mileage, but the key point is that it doesn't have to. It can just improve the drivability.

Usually, more powerful versions of the same engine (all else equal) are more efficient. Unless you can increase the amount of available O2 to support combustion, any power increases will have to be the result of better use of the fuel injected. Adding more fuel to the same amount of air will only net small gains in very specific cases and it seems that more modern engines are able to run leaner without having to retard ignition timing away from MBT angles, so it's a diminished return on two fronts as far as going richer to get more timing/power.

I went from 20 to 12 mpg, but that's probably because it was so much more fun to drive after a tune. lol

5 litre engine decades ago got same / better mileage

in an attempt to meet the myriad EPA requirements ( mileage not the only parametre )

mileage has Not gone up dramatically

no less as U mention most want MORE Power......... More GO !!!

way back in the olden days there were NO 600HP pickup trucks

if one were to compare to the early Tacomas.............when ! would buy the rear bumper ( shipped without !!!)

    NO electronics

    no cruise

    etc

cant have cake & eat it too

What are you rambling about now? Those bigger V8's got same mileage when tested to a different set of conditions and no road loading calculation. If tested to the current EPA test, they would get far worse mileage numbers than they did and they made shit for power. Current engines get far better mileage and more power, some even with a better torque curve.

That was on my other car. lol

My taco is stock, and I like it just fine except when the radar cruise is on and the ECU turns into a 14 year old who just got his driving permit.

My 2020 is all stock except for the a/t tires. Have no clue what anyone is whining about, or what they expect these trucks to be.....600 hp. and 700 ft lbs of torque? The factory tune couldn't be better...truck does everything i need it to do. I was apprehensive coming from a 4.7 v8 tundra, but this truck has it covered.

What is a reasonable price to have someone run OVtune on your truck?
