Where'd you order the metal housing from? I've been eyeing it on Amazon for whenever my first oil change comes around, it's been hovering around the 35-40$ mark which seems like a cheap piece of mind.

Toyota sells it as an OEM part and the Amazoon one you probably see is their front.

just eat the cost? It was around $40 or something. unless you're not working, that's anywhere between an hour or 3 of work.

Okay, just wanted to see if the costs we're similar between dealer-online. The Subaru tweeters were 100-150$ more to buy online so you never know.

Fortunately I am still employed, so :spending:

Toyota went from the aluminum filter cap to plastic because aluminum-on-aluminum results in galling. Be sure to thoroughly lather the threads with oil if you go that route.

Yeah I got them for 150 at the subi dealer, but they were 300 on Amazon at the time. There was other alternatives on ebay but I wasnt into the USD converting and shipping/border stuff.

Yep. The filter cap is probably installed dry at the factory (they fill the oil after the whole engine is assembled). I think the galling was only a problem at the first oil change, which is at a lengthy 16,000 km after purchase.

And whoever at Toyota that signed off on the cartridge filters made the decision over 12 years ago. The dual-VVTi 4.0L in the 2010 4Runner/FJ already had it.

imagine not changing the oil before 8,000 km.

let the system wear itself in for shorter than what the oil is intended for and then change it. anything past that your only helping the engine, New oil will never hurt an engine.

Unless you have a 700k engine that you've changed the oil 5 times on it but still runs mint, at which point the internals are worn in to accommodate the theoretically thicker oil and new oil would be too thin and can cause damage.

It's OK. Living in the GTA with road salt, the engine even with negligent maintenance will outlast the frame.

The parking lot at my work is next to a road salt storage dome. I park in this for 3 months in a normal year:

I'm assuming using 17 year old lube techs has finally caught up with them.

You guys are talking about oil filter cartridges... am I missing something? My oil filter is on top on the left. Did they change them on the 3rd gens?

the future is now Old man
    :pccoffee:

(jokes aside, yeah the 3rd gen now has the filter/cartridge at the bottom of the engine in the new design, the location is not the issue, it's the idiotic 2 piece design of the container that i've had plenty of issues with the plastic cracking on me)

Oh boy i can't wait to spend $42,000 on new tires!
or getting engine work done for $53,000!

That's going to be a feature in 4th gen, when Toyota switches to electric power steering

Toyota changed to canister-type oil filter starting with the 4.0L 1GR-FE in 2010 in the 4Runner/FJ:

The Tacoma got it in 2016 with the 3.5L.

it violently shakes your steering in an a attempt to claim it as "simulated rumble strips" when crossing over the yellow line on the road and continues the deafening beeping, for the next version of TSS and the next step in automotive safety.

They'll probably go to full lane-keep assist and steer the truck for you.

Some engineer at Toyota is probably thinking: the rack can't leak if it doesn't use fluid :cookiemonster:
