That looks like a fun project. Too bad you lost the bed though.

 

What battery do you guys recommend for a trd OR 4x4 with two package? I dont overland or anything just a pair of ditch lights hooked up only. I know northstar is loved but it's out of my price range.

I'm still on my stock battery with 40k miles on it but it needs to be replaced soon.

It's like playing a game "who is on first?" We have three major battery manufacturers in the USA market. Exide, Interstate, Johnson and Johnson. When you go into sears and buy a "Diehards" is spec'd from on the manufactures. Sears was my go-to (they diluted the diehard brand sticking that label on the battery that had 800 CCA to one with 500CA). Then I went with the Autozone house brand, but Autozone realized people pay for the convenience of a store close to them and jacked prices. Walmart has the best deal on a battery.

If you do a lot of off-roading. AGM battery is good.

Cold weather? The highest CCA is good.

In Texas, our heat kills batteries after a few years. The lower starting current means different construction, so that Walmart battery is fine.

 

I installed a yellow top Optima battery last year in May and the battery died on me last week.. Totally dead. Auto Zone provided me with a replacement yellow top Optima battery, so i am good to go but, will see how this new one performs.
I do not know what exactly happened to the first yellow top Optima battery, not sure if it was a defective battery from factory or the charging voltage on my truck (17 Off road 4X4) want's enough and killed it??
The charging voltage on my truck is still the stock, as i do not have OV tune..

 

I'm in your shoes and monitoring, not quite one year so far. I'll let you know if I encounter something similar.

The Start/Stop does increase the number of battery cycles. I don't like the technology, batteries have a hard enough time with additional cycles.

I have a TOPDON Battery tester. Microprocessor, load resistor, and a small way of testing and predicting battery life. $50 but worth the peace of mind, and I am always checking other vehicles.

Modern electronics need good battery voltage, so with a weak battery, you have all sorts of off gremlins. I remember driving a dead battery for months. Park at the top of the hills, push start and get rolling, and pop the clutch!

 

Wait so 27f is for tow package equipped and 24f is for non tow packages?

 

No.....

Gen 3 Tacoma is a 24F. It doesn't matter if you have the tow package or not.

 

That was for 2nd Gen

 

27F are larger, heavier weight, higher capacity, physically larger.

The "F" means Ford Spec (battery just a little larger, PLUS and MINUS terminals are flipped around. My worst fubar was thinking "cables are long enough I'll flip around a non "F" battery and bolt it in. Hood support didn't clear and shorted out.

If I was using a winch and had the room under the hood I'd go with a 27F.

7 Pin towing, you have electric brakes back there, but don't worry about the battery size for towing.

 

Thank goodness our trucks don't have that Start/Stop shit, that would drive me nuts having the 3ngine shut off every time you stopped.

 

I thought the F in this case just means is for Reverse Terminals.

Oh, those batteries are the custom Yusua $450 solution! Ouch! It drove me crazy, as I would wait for a gap in traffic then go to pull out punch it. The engine would stop, restart, and take a second pulling out. Grrrrrr.

Same V6 in the Highlander and Tacoma. Highlander eight-speed helped with spacing, nicely matched with engine. Tacoma not as smooth, but the automatic six-speed is pretty robust.

 

Almost, just a hair difference in size. If cables were long enough, you would drop the 24 in place but watch where the hood hits!
