The Forscan seems worth it and not super expensive, so I think I'll buy it.

That looks like the correct one and I've ordered from Fairway Ford in the past also. I checked Tasca Ford Parts and they list that as an alternative or interchangeable part number so looks like it would work. Tasca lists JL3Z-19H332-AA for your vehicle, Fairway lists Tasca's number as interchangeable. I go back and forth between then and Tasca Ford Parts (their website is really good and they have good prices). In this case, looks like Fairway is cheaper.

Where the brake controller goes, you currently have a black plastic blank off panel. On my '13, the plug was directly behind the plastic and it was plug and play. Then, you can either go to the stealership and have them 'turn it on' or mess with ForScan and do it yourself. On a similar note, on my '13, there was a relay in my glove box that gets installed in the under hood fuse panel that powered the 7 pin connector so it'd charge a trailer while driving. The newer ones, I think it's all electronic and the truck senses when there's a trailer connected and that's the trigger but still worth maybe asking the dealer or testing on your own.

EDIT: didn't refresh, @js312 beat me to it

ForScan is free, you just have to buy the connector for your computer. There's an App I think you can buy, but you can get the free version also. I've always used the free version on my laptop. You just register to the forum and request a temporary product code or access code and you're good to go.

Yeah, it looks like I have a little cubby there where the controller goes. I found a video, it doesn't look terrible to install, just pulling off some interior panels.

I'm not sure if my truck senses it right, for some reason all my brake lights and turn signals work but the circuit for my trailer interior lights doesn't, and I bet that is the same circuit for charging the trailer.

Yep, that'd be the 12v charging circuit. Mine had a relay in the glove box, hopefully they gave you one, otherwise it's a few bucks at Vatozone. They weren't putting them in at the factory because, I'm guessing, a lot of trucks don't actually tow so not putting power to the circuit would prevent some corrosion from occuring.

    Good to know!

My last truck gave me a message about not charging the trailer properly once when I had the key on but engine off, so that one must have had it installed already--I don't think there was anything but the pigtail in the bag. I think there was something else with this one, that must be what it is!

I know, it's just dam frustrating. I think one of the biggest issues our society is facing, is the inability for people to have real discussions about shit. In my opinion, schools are failing us because they are not teaching kids to have those open political conversations. All this "safe" thinking is pulling us further apart.

on a side note, two towns in Maine have taken some steps to protect the right to give guns to bears.

If that's a joke and they are actually giving them to bears, one's gotta be Freeport

If that's not a joke, and you're talking about the sanctuary or whatever cities, one's gotta be Paris. The other....St. Agatha maybe?

Fort Fairfield is the one I know. I think Paris may be the other.

My mom's '01 Outback with 250k on it had the brake light come on. It's had a few hundred dollar repair every few months lately. She had the shop she uses look at it and they found one bad brake line and two bad calipers. They also found the transmission was leaking from the pan (she didn't explain this well). To drop the pan, replace the fluid and gasket and/or pan (not clear on which), replace the two calipers, and replace the bad brake line they wanted $550ish. I think that's actually very reasonable, but I told her the car isn't worth anything more than scrap value at this point and she should move on.

We looked at a '17 CX5 and '17 Outback 3.6R last night. Similar miles, price was within $500, both top trims. I figured we went late enough to avoid salesmen since she didn't want to test drive in the snow anyway, but we didn't luck out.

The Subaru guy was horrible. I didn't correct him on anything because he was super arrogant and I felt like he'd just argue, but he started out with a fake confused look saying "Oh, well, you have to understand there is no comparison between a CX-5 and Outback." His points were that the CX-5 doesn't have independent rear suspension so the ride will be awful (they're both multi-link rears, and Mazdas are known for their handling, and...what? We're not comparing to a sedan from 1995 here), the safety of the CX-5, specifically crash tests are nowhere close to the Outback (NHTSA says 5 stars for collisions, 4 stars for rollover on both vehicles), the reliability is nowhere close (I think Subaru has actually had more issues lately, and he backpedaled on this when he got the key saying he checked and they're actually neck and neck now), kept referring to the Subaru as being unique because it has a V6 engine (Subaru has never used a V engine in anything, I didn't outright correct him but said I had two Subarus with H6s in the past which seemed to puzzle him), then said Subarus are luxury vehicles and Mazdas are more comparable to a Hyundai or Kia (come on now, I have direct experience with both and I wouldn't call either a luxury vehicle, but I'd definitely give Mazda the edge in luxury). I said I had two Outbacks in the past and my girlfriend has a CX-5 and I was really impressed with it and she loved it. He said "Yeah, Mazda people like their Mazdas but I can't for the life of me understand why."

The Mazda guy was pretty good and said it was awesome she got 250k out of her current Outback. He said comparing them makes sense but thought the Outback was a bit larger and might be a little closer to the CX-9 (it is larger than the CX-5, still closer to that than the CX-9, but he has a point). He did talk up the Mazda, of course, saying it was a recent top safety pick and such, but didn't bash the competition.

Bashing the competition is not the way to get a sale. I have had two F-150s but I think I can objectively compare it to the GM and RAM alternatives and acknowledge that they're better in some areas.
