california emmisions exhaust question...

i have a 2000 toyota tacoma 3.4l, i was wondering if anyone had any insight as to why after i altered my exhaust system on my truck i keep having check engine lights constantly?, keep in my mind i have california emmisions. i'd appreciate the help.

 

So break with the info - what did you change?

 

id had my exhaust pipe cut about 3/4 the length of my cab and had a flowmaster 40 series installed with a 3.5in exit diameter and a turndown tip directly off of that, ever since ive done that i keep throwing a check engine light, my code reader keeps telling me its the o2 sensor constantly and ive already changed it.

 

Any chance the wiring to the sensor was damaged during the install?

After that I'm out of ideas, but any more details you can provide will help folks who are more knowledgeable than me to help you out.

 

U might not have completely erased the cel...how did u do it?
Did you just take off the ground and let it set or did u actually erased it with a obd2 scanner?

 

is it p0420? if so i noticed when i cut my exhaust i get this code, also when i had to temporarily run just cats i got it. but yet my cat converters are also going bad

 

im able to shut off the code with my scanner, and yes it is a p0420 code, ive had the same cats one there since ive owned the truck, so that may be the issue. and i had some shop out here in vegas do it that is no longer in bussiness.

 

that code seems to be a pest with 1st gens, i think it because toyotas emissions are soo finicky, honestly since cats cost 1k each before i look into them id replace the 02 sensor and fuel air ratio sensor with OEM parts, then see if i pass emissions, it might just be because of how finicky it is, but before you get it inspected make sure all codes are cleared and not stored

 

yea man, its a pest indeed, im gonna have my exhaust re-done and see if that doesnt help. i didnt realize cats cost that much. ive actually replaced my 02 sensor last summer, maybe i should replace my spark plugs too, its been a long while since i did that. also, last summer when it got really hot out here, my c.e.l. shut off and i was able to pass smog, gremlins i tell you.

 

and i just kind of have an idea, would i be able to use a 49 state emissions cat on my california emissions taco since i live in nevada, or would i have use a specific california cat?

 

wheres the truck registered? before pissing money id go get it inspected with the code cleared and see if itll pass, then id replace the fuel air ratio sensor

 

its registered out here in las vegas, nevada. ive replaced the air fuel ratio sensor less than 1.5 years agor, you think i should do it again, and thanks for helping me out man.

 

nah not if you did it that recently, i though you just got the 02 sensor. if its registered in nevada 49 states is fine, but if you get an aftermarket cat you may need to also purchase an 02 sensor simulator because toyotas dont really enjoy aftermarket cats.

like i said though id atleast try to get it inspected first

id check with URD and see if they have one, Cat deletes are usually more of a racing mod i think

 

im gonna have to check them out, and ever aftermarket bolt on cats get a lil pricy.
