Best Strategy for Upgrading 2WD to 4WD

Hello All,

I recently bought a 2021 2WD TRD Sport Double Cab. Sadly after buying I realized I would eventually want a 4WD to do more off-roading adventures.

I thought about keeping this truck for maybe 1-2 years and eventually using it as a trade it in for a 4WD TRD Sport or Off Road. Is this my only strategy? Is there any other options that I am unaware of?

Not really. It's very expensive and complicated to swap a 4X4 drivetrain into a 2wd.

Welcome to TW. Learn what the 2WD can do, and if you get stuck, trade it for a 4WD.

Might want to take it through a car wash first.

 

No I dont mean upgrading my existing truck. I meant like trading it in or selling and getting a different truck that is a 4x4. Maybe if I sell direct to a person I would get a better deal than trading it in? Finding a buyer would be hard though.

 

Post it for sale privately and see what happens. Also talk to a dealer and see what kind of deal they can work for you.

 

Life is short; dump the 2WD and get what you want. You will definitely eat some cash trading a newly bought vehicle in for another one, but chalk it up as the cost for making the wrong decision in the first place.

 

I would love to lift this truck and push its limits but if I trade it in it would be a waste .

Pushing a 2WD stock suspension doesn't sound as fun lol. That is my only option at this point.

 

Youd be surprised what a stock 2WD sport on good tires can do. I take mine out frequently.

I just never think to get out and photo it during the pucker moments.

Hold onto the truck for a year, test it out off-road and then wait for the dealer to contact you asking you to trade it in because they have people looking for a truck like yours. I started with a 2018 OR and then they called and said they needed my truck. I went in not expecting to accept their deal, next thing I know I am driving away with a loaded 2019 OR. Not trading this one in, even though they keep asking. It has what I want right now, lifted, winch, etc...

 

Nice view! Did you upgrade your tires right away or wait until it was used?

So far I have only done 2 easy trails. One of which had some snow which got me stuck and I had to put some chains.

I like the idea of waiting for 1-2 years since I might change my mind and decide to keep the 2wd.

 

How long from time of purchase until they started calling?

 

Mine came with the firestones, which I tried to put up with but ultimately couldn't. I wound up throwing in the towel at 10,000 miles and swapping to some proper all terrains.

Guys were getting great prices for their Tacomas on Carvana several months back...

 

Go to Carmax/Carvana and see what they offer, they might surprise you and just take it from there. However, be mindful that new ones are going way up, but a whole lot of repos maybe coming your way soon.

Yeah, check Carvana for sure. I was floored by how much they were willing to give me for my 10 year old Corvette; and no dealing with the general public! I have sold expensive performance cars in the past on my own, and you would not believe the crazy Mo-Fo's that you have to deal with. No thanks!

 

The first time was at the year mark and that lead to the purchase of the 2019. With the 2019 they have called at the year mark and then almost monthly emails after that saying that they need my vehicle.

Enjoy the truck and get what you can out of it. In the past I have taken 2wd a Mazda and Nissan everywhere across the Arizona desert and mountains. Here in North Carolina I have spent more time on the beach and 4wd is beneficial to get others pulled out. Just this last summer was a minivan and a suv.
