It took me two years to find a used 6' ARE in MGM, never selling it.

I will always have a top for my truck. I haul too many things I want out of the rain, and more or less out of sight. And, I appreciate the flexibility of a trailer: lower load height, larger platform, easier to clean after hauling really dirty stuff (like mulch). Both Cap and trailer were about the same price <$2000 each. I know not everyone has a place to store a trailer - I do.

Crawl in, slip into my appropriately rated sleeping bag, and then go to sleep.

If it's going to rain, bring a tent. If it's going to be snowing you honestly don't want to be in a closed camper shell. The amount of condensation that builds up in a space that small is a sloppy mess. That of course leads to a discussion about heaters and propane vs diesel and another litany of other scenarios.

Truth is, platforms aren't that convenient.

I ran into this with both trucks.

I had a cap on my 2013 for about 4 months prior to it getting totalled. The drive home was enough to put a few small scuffs in the tailgate. I buffed most of them out and put some rocker chip guard clear tape on the tailgate to prevent the door from rubbing. The 2G truck had bed rail caps that covered more area so that a shifting cap would not have hit paint, but would have hit plastic. The original plan was for a cap to keep snow out of the bed and people from throwing garbage into my truck (which happened more than one because some people are terrible humans).

I ran a cap for about 2 months on my 2016 before I realized it shifted and rubbed a tiny area at the top of the bed. I had already taped up my tailgate when I bought the truck in preparation if I ever did a cap. I was checking the orientation of the cap as well as the bolt torque weekly, which became a chore in itself. As soon as I saw the paint damage, the cap came off.

For my usage, I found myself using my bed more for tall objects than objects with I needed to keep dry. One of the things I used the truck for was to transport a snowblower to and from my Mom's. With the cap on my 2013 it went from being in the bed to on a really wobbly hitch basket that just didn't work well for my usage. I don't regret selling the cap, but for other people I can understand why it would be super useful.

I was also extremely lucky in that I ended up making money with both caps. I purchased the 2013 cap for $370, broke the rear glass trying to fix the hinge and had that repaired for $370 and ended up getting $900 in the total loss settlement. With the 2016 I purchased the cap for $400 and sold it for $700 two months later.

I didn't hate how they looked on the truck, but I wouldn't go back.

Mine will be complete once I find a canopy for it. Back in the day, my granddad built a super handy hoist system in his garage to easily remove and stow a canopy in the rafters. Easily installed/removed with one person, but easier with two.
