Whether the turbo is located in the engine comparment or not, that has nothing to do with the purpose of the intercooler.

That's the thing about the sts. Because it is outside of the engine compartment, it's somewhat around 500 degrees cooler than if it was inside the engine compartment. The air inside the piping shouldn't get nearly as hot as the air in an internally mounted turbo piping. Am I right?

I not sure if the figure of a 500 degree difference is that accurate, but you are right it will be cooler atleast somewhat. The intercooler is still going to help get more oxygen to the engine.

    A few bolts are different.
I think it does, I agree with MacTaco on this one.

I have an STS turbo. It works very well for me. The intercooler is recommended for anything above 7 PSI, but it is not required. You definitely need the fuel pump mod to run the STS turbo. While it is a bolt on kit, it is not an easy install (but worth it) and a lift would be recommended. I would negotiate a better price since it is second hand.

I thought the purpose of the intercooler was to cool off the air after it was compressed and before it went into the engine.

So as the two of you understand it, what is the soul purpose of an intercooler??:)

"Intercooler" Just how I understand it, but i'm no expert for sure.

I am certainly no expert either, but the soul purpose of the intercooler (as I understand it) is to cool the incoming air to squeeze as many oxygen molecules into the combustion chamber as possible. The cooler the incoming air is, the more compressed the oxygen molecules will be. Which in turn will increase the amount of fuel that can be burned. ehhh?;)

Personally, if I had the cash, I would get one right now.

    It's totally badass.

Yea, that's it's exact job. Like the guy who owns one says. It's not a required object, because the piping can take car of the cooling(and the "compression of the oxygen molecules," Justin. Ha) But, if you are running 8 psi boost or higher, then the air is going to be significantly hotter and will then require an intercooler.

Im not expert, but I do know a bit about turbos, technically speaking an intercooler like this one is actually an after-cooler, it cools the air after the turbo, before the intake manifold. This cooler would have the same effect as a CAI, colder denser air= more power potential. You don't see many actual intercoolers anymore, intercooler means the air is cooled within the engine, usually liquid cooled, old old detroit diesels used to use intercoolers but with a blower instead. Popular culture has adopted the term intercooler.

That turbo kit looks kinda cool, I think that with such low boost you wouldn't really need an intercooler, wouldn't hurt tho if he's got it. I wonder how well it would tuck up inside some budbuilt skids?

Intercooler or not, one thing you might want to consider before buying is the intake configuration. As I understand, those setups require you to cut a hole in your bed and mount the airbox inside the bed. If you're ok with that, then go for it. I'm sure everyone would love to see pics and hear about the install and results.

Sts sells a snorkel kit that puts the intake high up inside the rear fender, so no cutting is necessary.
