ruined Undercover Tonneau

so i removed the Undercover decal on my tonneau and used Goo Gone to try and remove the adhesive... bad idea!!

the goo gone eats thru the cover and changes the color to a faded black. i've tried "Back to Black" but no help. anybody know what i can use to bring the color back without using spray paint. im thinking of using black liquid shoe polish... any other ideas?

 

Black nail polish, maybe. Never seen an one of those covers up close enough to really call it.

 

Goo Gone and nail polish are both basically solvents , I would avoid a repeat performance .

You should post this question in the detailing section , you are bound to get some help there .

never used it on a truck but it works great on anything ive tried to get glue off of. maybe give it a test in an un noticable spot before the actual removal

 

Based on my limited research on the product and seeing similar reports, the Undercover is obviously not solvent friendly. I had a set of plastic revolver grips that was quickly melted by GunScrubber, yet my Glocks and plastic AR furniture aren't affected by it. I'm no expert on plastics, but I know some can take it and some can't.

I don't have an Undercover, but if it's the type of plastic I'm thinking of, I'd probably experiment with various grades of sandpaper and try using a heat gun (gently) to restore it to something closer to the original finish and texture. If it's JUST the color and no deformation of the material, and a little heat from the heat gun didn't do anything, I might try some Rit dye or something.

 

Or, just rub down the rest of the top with Goo Gone to match.

Just re-apply the sticker to cover it up.

 

Duct tape works good for removing adhesive that is left over when removing stickers.

 

so far ive used Color Magic and black shoe polish... the Color Magic helped a little bit, but still noticeable

 

Useful information; thanks for passing on your experience. I'll remember not to do that with my Undercover.

Why not spray paint? If you're wanting it to be a glossy black, maybe you could just mask around the area and hit the spot gently with some black Krylon. Maybe overspraying that spot and the surrounding area with a semi-gloss clear coat would get you in the neighborhood.

Caveat - I'm no detailer or auto body guy, with not much mechanical experience. It's just an idea. Want an epidural? Hand me the needle and you're good to go. Want mechanical work on your truck and hand me a wrench? Come back in an hour to fix what I've messed and then do it right yourself.

TXBulldawg: Gunscrubber markets a "plastic-safe" version that is essentially the same as non-chlorinated brake cleaner. I still try to keep it off polymer stuff, but it hasn't damaged Magpul or A2 furniture on my ARs. It's great for cleaning the bolt carrier, but strips oil from everything it touches. Be sure to lube everything it touches afterwards, or you'll get rust spots.

Find a wide tip black permanent marker for the touch up on the mellted tonneau.

 

How about taping it off and trying to shoot it with some gloss black spray paint.

Depending on the paint, the solvents in that could really kill it.

There is some stuff called Marhyde made by 3M that is a interior/exterior vinyl paint that might work. check with your auto paint store, they might help.

 

Why not call the manufacturer and see if they can send you a container of the paint they use? Maybe they have rattle cans of it for touch ups in the factory.
