when i got my tires removed from my rims, it seems that the shop removed the valve cores. i didn't notice until now. is this common? if i get tires installed somewhere else, is that something they would have to do anyway, or do i have to replace them first?

Yes, Common practice, fastest way to get enough air out to break the bead. They SHOULD replace valve stems while the tire is off the rim, but with so many TPMS equipped vehicles, new practices are needed. Most valve cores are identical (or at least interchangeable), but either way I’d call back to the tire shop and ask for cores and caps to be put back at no charge. Prolly just an oversight on the tire guy.
There is no expectation from the customer, however they may be a small fee if you bring those rims to a different place. I guarantee any tire shop has 8,456,322 extra cores just lying around (on the bead machine, on the balancer, with wheel weights, and on the floor).

Short answer. Should be very cheap if not free. Call the peeps that forgot to put back in first.
