Good morning everyone! I'm kind of new here, but I've been reading these threads since 2012. I'm new to SA and was wondering if someone could recommend a trustworthy shop on the east side in the Cibolo/Schertz/Selma area. I'm having a transmission problem with my Tacoma.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks! Maybe someone here can help me figure out WTH is going on. And to preface this - the check engine light is not on, so I can't get a quick diagnosis.

So here's what happens... When driving, once on a side street and once on the highway, the check engine light comes on and the vehicle feels like it loses power. Suddenly the gas pedal gets much harder to press and I have to press it 3/4 of the way to the floor to make it move again. When it changes gears, it makes a 'clunk' noise, but does shift. The engine power is very touchy at this point. Press on the gas pedal until it gets power and then it takes off! Like, I peeled out in a parking lot while trying to park it after it happened the second time. The engine does not shut off. After sitting for a day or so, everything goes back to normal. No check engine light, no loss of power, gas pedal feels perfectly normal and no clunking when shifting.

I have a friend who has the thing to read the code for the check engine light, but it hasn't come on since it happened that second time and when the light isn't on, it doesn't show any codes. If I could get a diagnosis, I definitely would. The plan is to take it in somewhere to have it diagnosed. I'll be selling it either after it's fixed or as-is. Whichever turns out to be more economical.

Not sure about a true transmission shop.
For sure avoid Sargent Clutch on Walzem...just ask @hoverlover

    As far as mechanics:
John Reimann @ Premier1 off San Pedro
Glen Hugo @ Your Mechanic off Bitters & 281

If they cant do it they can certainly point you in the right direction.

It doesn't show a code cause it hasn't reoccurred enough for the engine to say it a fault just give it time if it does it enough it will put a code on there

Bert's Gene Brown Transmission - the only shop I trust. Bert took care of me good, the price wasn't bad, and he went above and beyond. I got status updates every morning from Tony and they got it done on time.

A little something every chance we get.
Welcome! And, sorry, don't know any magic tranny shops for automatic. My past experiences with independents would make me go to a dealer, just because they shouldn't have an excuse..... But, good luck!

The good news is that doesn't sound like your transmission because everything went back to normal later. Automatic transmissions tend to only get worse and you can almost always replicate the problem.

You might have stored codes. A stored code won't always give you the check engine light but a Toyota tech with the TechStream reader SHOULD be able to see it. Some aftermarket OBDii products like the Scangauge or the FixID will also show stored codes. The FixID is a decent everyday option, it's Bluetooth to your phone so it will look the codes up for you and tell you what might be wrong, looks like this -

Take it to Bert's, whatever the problem is, he'll find it and fix it. Check out their reviews.

Take your pick of things to say about about freedom of speech, the necessity of criticizing the government, and internet hurt feelings and put it right here.

I get the purpose of the rule but at this rate they'll be powdering our assess and putting them in diapers for us sooner than later.
