If you go to Grand Canyon plan on dropping the trailer and checking out Point Sublime on the North Rim. It's a fun afternoon of off roading and the best view of the canyon.

Depending on how things go, I may be looking to take a couple day adventure up there during April Break.

When is April break? I'm running away for 2 weeks in March, if you're talking week days it might be iffy for me wanting to tag along randomly dropping in another couple days off a few weeks after a 2 week road trip

Aww :( yeah keep me posted.

PS - If you are in for the radio stuff, I would recommend looking into APRS, it's pretty cool. I've heard it worked pretty good in the NMW from @m603holden, but getting it set up is not super cheap, and it's an amateur radio license (ham) needed, unlike CB and (ish) GMRS (no exam for GMRS license, 15$/10 years)

ya, Im not sure what ill do in the end, but getting the license probably won't happen.

CB or FRS radios then are your (legal) options for TX without any license.

GMRS is no test, 15$/10 years for a license. It used to be 75$/10 year, but that is being reduced heavily. We still don't have a date of when that change will take place though. Worth noting, if you have a CB and FRS radio, that will pretty much cover most of your off road needs. GMRS is a step up, some off road clubs "require" a GMRS license and radio, and they'll use a GMRS channel instead of an FRS channel for comms. GMRS has more power than FRS, to put it simply.

Ham was free for all licenses, BUT is soon to be 15$/license, I believe. You only get one call sign/license, but can go up to other levels. There's tech (what I have and what you'll see the most of), general, and amateur extra. The two "advanced" levels open up some more bands and power levels. And new call sign configurations (you can request your own call sign, for example I could request K1ROB as my call sign). Mobile radios are limited to what wattage you can get on your vehicle, anyway, so as far as a mobile application is concerned, anything above tech is overkill. :notsure: Some, few and far between, off road clubs/groups require a ham license. You take the test, it's wicked easy.

    https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-T10...ld=1&keywords=frs+radio&qid=1614111119&sr=8-1

This (or any FRS) radio, and a CB (either handheld or mounted), no licenses needed. If you're out with people w/ CB, use the CB. If you're out with people w/ GMRS, use an FRS channel 1-14, GMRS radios can use them, too. And if they refuse, turn around and leave because those people are not worth spending time with

Realistically all you'd need. I just go overkill because I'm bored.

ya I have a few handhelds I picked up from Cabelas a while back, we used them on a some multi vehicle road trips and once on a winter backroad adventure. My plan has been to just slap a unit in the truck, but clearly I haven't made any progress towards that goal.

The only thing about the handhelds vs. a vehicle mount is legality on the road. I don't know what the handheld laws are everywhere but an HT might be considered illegal where as a mounted mic is not. :notsure:

Yup. There are gmrs radios with hand mics like that but frs I don’t think they’re allowed to. I think it has to be all enclosed they can’t even have modular antennas for frs certified.

It's more the antenna that's an issue. Cannot modify the antenna because it changes the strength of the signal

GMRS also has repeaters in some areas which would greatly improve range if your signal can reach it.

No idea at this point. Once Maine re-opens to travel we'll pick a date and get it locked in.

I think it is reopened to residents of neighboring states. At least I know us massholes aren't considered degenerate plague carriers anymore.
