    1. Don’t do that.
    2. No really, just don’t.
    3. Reread 1 and 2.

shift the transfer case first before the front end. The axle ends need to be spinning in unison before engaging the front axle sleeve and the only way to do that is to shift the transfer case first. Yes, 2lo is 2lo with the transfer case in 4lo and the front axle disconnected.

Ya, I wasn’t tempted to haha. Bit of a rhetorical question, though I had never actually opened up the intervals and I still have the electronic xfer case for now.

my point re: 2lo was just that the front axle is just not fully disconnected unless you shift the range fork manually without the mode fork leaving 2wd which you can only do with twin sticks I believe. Imagine this, shift to 4lo, leave ADD disconnected but engage your front diff lock. What do you have now?

it makes a lot of noise, don’t do it as suggested. There are two ways I’ve found to safely activate.
1- activate ADD first while stopped, similar to walking out and locking hubs, you can then shift in and out of 4wd as speeds with no issue
2- shift transfer case into 4wd at speeds, then activate ADD, if you don’t want to come to a stop. This is exactly how the oem setup will sequence it.

yes 2lo is 4lo with an open passenger side axle via ADD

Yes, that is correct. Without twin sticks, 2lo is "active" by not locking in the front axle. With twin sticks, you can select low range in the transfer case without activating the front driveshaft. I still have the stock set up although I do have an extra 6sp input gear set waiting for me to get around to purchase a FJ case. Honestly, I've been waiting for a company to come up with a cable that replaces the actuator on the TC and moves the rod directly. Looks simple enough to me. My TC experience is from breaking a few on former trucks...

I've see someone cable actuate the front but not the TC. Actually, there is a product called Posi-Lok 4X4 that is a cable to replace an actuator. Unfortunately, they don't make one for the Tacoma. It worked well on my former truck.

I wish I remembered the username. It was definitely the xfer case because he had his ADD motor pulled and the hole plated in the engaged position

My T case came without the shifter assembly. Anybody know a good alternative instead of buying direct from Toyota where it’ll be about $250-$300 in parts? eBay is not turning up much

just order this and modify for your truck. its the same lower end and all you need is so 1/2 round bar. Thats what i used for mine. This is basically all you need to fabricate something [IMG]

If this is within your wheelhouse to fabricate then I have a shifter base that's hacked off you can weld some round bar to, or pick the shifter Brian mentioned and pop it into this base. Refund me the cost of shipping it to you and its yours.

I’m surprised know one has come out with a kit for a manual shifter for the stock t case on the 2nd gen Tacoma’s , of coarse the FJ swap is a great option but that’s not an easy thing for some .

It would involve much of the same work but would cost more for custom parts

You would have to essentially swap everything on the inside. There isn’t anything for the shifter to shift the rails if you go in from the top. And if u went by the rear you would have a very hard time to seal up the hole.
