Taurus pt740 for ccw

Ill be getting my chl license next month so in leu of that I went to the local mom & pop gun store and put a Taurus pt740 on lay a way

I'm a skinny guy and I dont think I could carry a double stack pistol very comfortably so I opted for a single stack. I went in to the store thinking i was gonna get the 709 (9mm) and the guy said they had a used one or a new 740 (.40 cal) and I said Ill take the 40! this way ill be able to use the same ammo for carry as i do for my bed gun.

It will probably be late January when I actually get the gun but I'm still excited.

 

That's a snappy cartridge for a cc-size platform.
I'd opt for 9mm or 45acp.
I also have doubts re a second-hand Taurus.
I have their revos, but am not confident in their autos.

x2? how would a .40 have more "snap" than a .45?

I read reviews after reviews on this gun. I read a lot more good ones than bad ones, it seems like most of the bad ones where from people not cleaning all the packing grease off/out of the gun prior to shooting them. But I am with you on the used taurus, that was a no go for me.

 

The recoil impulse is short.
9mm and 45acp normally have longer recoil impulse.
In layman's terms, sharp vs soft.
IOW, 40sw is a higher-pressure cartridge, and has a different type of recoil than 9mm or 45acp

 

well since this wont be a range/plinking gun I think ill be ok as long as im not trying to sling 200 rounds down range per trip with it. thats what my XD is for.

So I got my Pt740. Got it home and cleaned the heck out of it, it was loaded with tons of white packing grease. Ive only had one trip to the range with it so far.
first impression, Meh, it was ok. I guess im just use to shooting my full size XD

I was only there long enough to shoot 4 mags through it unfortunately.
but it functioned flawlessly so far, no jams or anything like that so thats good.
I like that it has a thumb safety, it has a trigger safety like the xd as well.
The trigger has a pretty long draw on it though and it doesnt have a definite feel to it where you know the trigger resets so I was having to go through the full range of motion will each trigger pull.
It was really cold and windy outside for this trip, hopefully Ill be able to get out soon on a nice day and spend some more time on this gun and get a better write up and some pics.



When I was picking up this gun from the dealer they showed me a new kimber 9mm

If you are not willing to practice with it you shouldn't carry it.

I'd run at least 400-500 rounds through it before I had enough confident in it enough to carry it. Most automatics need that for a break-in period to ensure it operates correctly.

 

I agree with you 100% and I DO plan on being very proficient with it before I decide to carry it.
