I also feel this way. Dealership gave me 2020 Highlander Platinum with JBL as a loaner. Sound was nice but did was not amazing.

I understand CSC is useful in certain off road situations.
However, in the example in this video, "hill start assist" (or whatever) holds my truck for a few seconds while I engage the clutch.

Yes. That particular function is only in the MT Sports and SRs. The AT ORs and Pros have a different kind of HSA that doesn't seem to work as well. All other 3rd Gens apparently have nothing.

HSA is nice, but not a deal breaker for me. I've had zero issues holding up the e-brake, gassing into it a little, then dropping it. Zero rollback, and I've done this on some stupidly steep downtown Seattle hills.

All of the missing "features" are a small price to pay to have a transmission with gear ratios that don't suck (besides reverse...). The several grand saved over the auto version is a cherry on top.

I agree, but it still shows how to use it as a crawl control type system.

I'm just stating what is there and what isn't.

Personally, I have never used an e brake assist. Just a foot dance. There are times when the feature is merely nice, but I'd like the option to choose.

It was a dealbreaker for me. I didn’t want it because I like to fight the hills with the MT. Had it in my old Subarus but could at least turn it off. Made parallel parking on hills in PA a bear before I figured that out.

This is what the handbrake is for...

This is the reason that we still have a HANDbrake. One that you can modulate as needed... and not one of thise silly button operated parking brakes. (Another stupid button implementation).
Not to mention that it is much needed for handbrake-turns as well! (Try that with your button e-brake!)

our subby outback is an electric ebrake.

Didn't realize there was that much hate for the hill assist.

Naaah - not a lot of hate... Just got an the soapbox for a bit of a rant... (it seemed funny as I was writing!)

Auto Manufacturers Have to come up with new fangled things. Otherwise people would not have things to covet. This process is frustrating when the outcome is silly... The electric e-brake is a good example... (independently of any hill assist system).

Is the button e-brake better in any practical way? I cannot think of a single way that it may be... (maybe granny does not have to pull as hard to engage?). Its implementation results in lack on modulation ability, you have no 'feel' for engagement, etc.

I think it is worse as you have no idea if it needs an adjustment. I've had a couple cars where it needed some adjustment to hold firm.

The other aspect is after a real hot run, do you really want a full on parking brake. I try to not mash the brakes after a good workout. Got pinched with induced warp a long time back.

Reworked in what way? Isn’t it mostly software based? Also, doesn’t the push button start system have a Park/Neutral switch? That could just be wired as the CCS.

Most Toyota models these days use an ECU-controlled starting system, with or without smart key. When you turn the key to "START," a signal is sent to the engine ECU, which runs the starter until the engine starts or approx. 10 s pass, whichever comes first.

For the manual transmission Tacoma, it uses a conventional starting system where the "START" position actually controls the starter for as long as you hold the key in that position. This, combined with the clutch start cancel switch allows you to use the starter to move the truck in gear.

Toyota models that use smart key with automatics, a body ECU monitors the the shifter position (must be in P/N) and stop light signal, so that when you press the brake, the system knows you want to start the car, and sends a "START" signal to the engine ECU, which then runs the starter as long as needed. Models that have a manual transmission essentially work the same, but instead of the brake pedal, you push the clutch pedal to start.

If you wanted a push button starting system that works with the clutch start cancel switch, you would need to change the system and instead of the switch just acting like the clutch pedal was pushed, you would need to know separately whether the clutch pedal was pushed or the switch was activated, and in the case when the switch is activated, disable the ECU's starting system logic and instead run the starter for as long as the push button is held.

It's not like it would take them years to work it out, but at some meeting somewhere, someone said hey if we do smart key for the manual trucks, we're going to need to rework the starting system, and some other guy said how many more trucks will we sell if we do that, and yet another guy said, probably very few, and so they kept the clutch start cancel switch and didn't implement smart key.

It probably wasn't the only reason, but it feels like the thing that probably played the biggest part.
