Its just Squared and glued, also hand holds and flat rubber feet on bottom since its Only 3/4" thick.

 

No sure, it is sealed so its stabilized decent imo. Its headed to michigan so see how it holds up

 

Anybody here ever installed click lock engineered wood floors? I've got some questions

 

I have, not sure I have the answers you want but I can try.

 

I'm laying it across 3 bedrooms and a hallway and would like it to be continuous without a transition in each doorway...having a hard time figuring out where to start since you can only lay it down in one direction (tongue side facing out and add to the tongue side).

I'll do a quick sketch in a second of the room and hall layout..

 

If that makes sense...not to scale obviously

 

Start in that bottom right hand corner with the male side of the tongue pointed up, Or start in the top right corner with the male side of the tongue pointed to the left.

I think I would go with the first option though as it will allow you to have the planks running long ways down that hallway. It seems to me like that would look better.

Does that make sense?

 

Yeah gotcha...any tips on how to work around the stair nosing and balusters?

 

That I have not done. Does the manufacturer of your flooring have any custom trim pieces that could be used for that purpose?

If you are talking about how to transition from your flooring to the bottom of the first stair you could use a piece of quarter round trim.

 

Remove the balusters and put back in place when the floor is finished. With only exact size cutouts for the balusters.

They should have a stair nosing to match.

 

I'd go with the first option as well, but take some time to measure it out first. That long run down the hallway is where I'd try and focus on the most as it's got the longest sight line. I wouldn't want to have to rip a 1" strip down the left or right side of that hallway alllll the way down if I didn't have to.

Further to that as most things are seldom square you may find starting in that bottom right room square to the wall, you may end up having a taper going down that hallway which only gets accentuated with the length.

I'd almost think laying down a strip along the "bottom" (south side if your picture was north up top) of the hall and then spacing pieces 'south' into that bedroom to see what kind of taper you're looking at.

Baseboard will cover for some small gaps you'd be leaving for expansion around the whole project

 

Balusters and railings are toe nailed in and filled with wood filler unfortunately....going to be a pain to remove. Going to make a custom stair nose, just not sure if I need to have it overlap and hide an expansion gap or if it would be okay to flush mount it (it's a floating floor)

 

I believe you would want to leave a bit of an expansion gap since its a floating floor.

missing drawers in the bottom 4 cubbies and doors on the bottom ends.

Any thoughts of moving the speakers to either next to the TV or on the left and right shelves instead of down low?

Here's the entertainment center I designed and a former coworker built at my previous house.



The left, right and center speakers are behind the black speaker cloth above the TV, the subwoofer was in the bottom right corner and the PS3 was in the bottom left.

The cabinet to the left of the TV had full extension slides and held all of my movies.

Not pictured was crown moulding that was added later.

 

yes, the goal is to build speakers worth showing off instead of the crappy stuff in that photo, but i haven't found the time yet. i ordered an Overnight Sensations kit to do a center channel, and if that works out i'll build L and R that will probably just stand next to the TV in the main cabinet area, which is why it's wider than the TV in that shot.

I've considered subs in the config you have as well. the girlfriend is redoing this area with new carpet and a couch, so i'm going to lose my spot for a sub in the corner of the room in the rear, which is a shame.

 

Looks a bit like the center channel I have in my theater room. New on the bottom, the one it replaced on the top.





And you can NOT lose the sub. I have three. My wife isn't amused but I keep them turned down.
