U-Joints

Alright, I have been to adavance auto, NAPA, and AutoZone... none of them carry or have ability to order u-joints for a 05+ 4x4 front propeller shaft. Finally got fed up and even went to the local stelership, all they can do is order me a whole new assyembly!! $500+ So I have started looking online only to be just as baffled. I forgot to ask the parts guy for the part number because I was in shock. Anybody have any ideas?



Oh yeah, I took the shaft out during the summer because the joints were shot and tossed the old joints. Of course I waited until now to try and find some. I thought it would just be a 5min trip to the parts store as usual. I'm about to drive back to michigan and not having my 4wheel drive is making me nervous...

 

Why didn't you just keep the joints until you found a suitable replacement? Hard to match something up at a parts place without the old ones...

 

I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to just buy one and see how it fits.

I have replaced many u-joints and it has never been more than going to ANY auto store and getting new ones. This is F'ed.

Hmm, maybe this could give me a good reason to buy a one piece and a nice new prop shaft from TomWoods.

Funny,,,,, I had been tossing around that spare front u-joint for some time. If I find the box I will post part number here but it won't be soon.

Did you try Toyota parts? Thats how I got mine. Just walk into to the desk and ask for front u-joint.
Also did you keep your snap rings or you throw them away too?
If you did you pretty much need new driveshaft.

 

I did go to the dealer and ask them, said all they could do was order me a whole new assy. I tossed the snap rings with the shot joints, why would that result in needing a new assy? New u-joints come with new snap rings.

Well if I dont get this resolved soon I'm just going to give Tom Woods a call and drop 1k+ on a one piece and a prop shaft.

Each snap ring has specific thickness to balance the shaft never throw them before getting new ones.
You can call Tom Woods but I would buy one of the many junkyard ones available in NY. For $150 its hard to beat the price.
Not sure about your dealership but that's where I got mine. I dont see part listed but I think its the same as old Tundra front DS

 

I kinda disagree with you on the snap rings, never heard of that before. Not saying your wrong, just difference of opinion I guess. Thanks for the idea about the junkyards, I'lll check into that. Still wish I could find the part numbers for these elusive little shits.

 

Ah, okay you are right about the snap rings just had to keep reading a little bit. I guess the are color coated for different thicknesses. Touche good sir.

 

Toyota doesn't supply the 4x4 u-joints by themselves, you have to replace the whole assembly. Only PreRunners u-joints can be replaced.

 

I got my rear u-joints done at a local drive shaft shop in TN. They were able to order all new Dana Spicer u-joints. look for a specialist. I would believe a specialist could do the same for the front shaft.

 

I take it you checked with a local driveline specific shop??

 

Yeah I have a good local shop (cook Brothers) here that fixed my rear shaft for me. I was just trying to find some replacements before sunday so I would have 4wd for my trip to michigan (across canada and back). Plus I wanted to have a little fun while I was there but I guess I'll just have to wait until I get back so I can take the shaft to Cook Bro's.
