Read any other article he's written..
What about the one where he spends 90% of the article talking about his dangerous bear hunt, then wounds it and goes home..
    He's a tool.

That's cool. I've just been annoyed with his writing for years.

I didn't mind the article. We own 2x 3rd Gen Tacomas and very happy with them. Sure, I'd be pleased if the drivetrain was a bit more "lively" at low RPM, but I knew what I was getting from the first test drive. The 3.5 being used in other vehicles doesn't bother me. The Ranger uses an engine used in other platforms, so does the Colorado, so does the Frontier. Hell, if the Tacoma engine is a "minivan engine" then Corvette/Camaro 6.2 is a "truck engine". There are plenty of vehicles that other people love that you couldn't give me to drive (Corvette/Camaro...cough, cough ). Early in my work career, a supervisor listen to me complain a bit and then said "If you don't like your job, quit." Good advice and I say the same about the Tacoma....if you don't like it, get something else.

This. If you’re not familiar with his prior work this might seem somewhat innocent but its really hard to square this with everything else.

Since we’re having some fun with this (at least I am), if you really read the article, its more about how he’s a shitty friend than a Tacoma critic. Doesn’t advise against buying the tacoma in the first place or any of the modifications but instead quietly collects all of this data to one day write this article as his big gotcha! I mean I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually encouraged the purchase and the mods just so he had future content.

I look forward to his next article about his poor friend where the full size truck Wes encouraged him to buy is too big, too inefficient, etc, etc. Of course this was super obvious to Wes who in the future will advise his friend to simply buy an Outback with AT tires and the cycle begins anew.

Happy Friday... I mean Thursday everyone!

    Me too.

I think it’s telling that he used Tacomabeast as one of the embedded affiliate example link thingys too. He’s the same one that, in an article in Outside, tsk-tsked the TW community for being pissed that those guys defaced rocks in Utah a few years ago. Wes would then seem to be primarily in it for the internet traffic and affiliate quid pro quo.

And if I’m wrong I expect him to explain the ethics of his choices regarding embedded media by way of a subsequent article in Outside magazines that also has a word from the editor in charge of digital content.

He made valid points and rustled enough Jimmies to get a bunch of clicks. I’ve followed him for years since he was a bike guy. His style definitely rubs people the wrong way which tends to generate a lot of comments. Thing is that’s his job. Doesn’t make him an idiot quite the opposite he’s very good at what he does. People just don’t like to admit that journalism now is some facts sprinkled in with writing that generates interest. Hate the public for not wanting real journalism anymore not guys like Wes for delivering what they demand.

I agree that he’s pursuing the almighty click with his writing style and content.

I disagree with the idea that Outside magazine writers are journalists. They aren’t, not even the good writers like Krakauer.

Spot on! I like that you closed the loop. A circle jerk, so to speak . . .

The journalism that we deserve. I can abide by that take.

I would argue the use of . . . some facts sprinkled in . . . To me, it is hyperbole with missing details. But, hey, mostly the same.

I think that’s the secret sauce though. The hyperboles gets people worked up and the missing details gives people a reason to jump in to add information.

Yeah, I guess. But I’m not calling myself a pornstar even though I’ve uploaded more than 275 homemade videos to youpoon*.

Most college students I interact with have no idea what sort of framework a real journalist uses because they don’t follow actual journalists—just reporters and media personalities. I’m sure TW users trend the same way.
