2017 Tacoma, 53000km Engine Failure

Hey guys, first post ever on here, I have a 2017 SR5 V6, only 53000 km on it, started misfiring out of nowhere almost 6 weeks ago, been at the toyota dealership since. I guess there was a leak in some sort of tube near the pistons, still trying to clarify what exactly the issue is, long story short most of the engine is being replaced/rebuilt under warranty, wondering if anyone else has had a similiar issue and if they had further issues after the work was completed. All scheduled maintenance done at Toyota, planned to keep this truck until the day it died, now who knows. Trying to have warranty extended by Toyota canada we will see how that goes as that is the minimum rectification I will accept after 6 weeks of waiting, driving a dinky front wheel drive rav 4

This sounds like a 'shit happens' situation. This engine is in a LOT of toyota's and this is not a common problem.

Unfortunately, in nearly all cases, there is no follow up to posts like this and we never know the details of the failure. Please don't be one of those posters

 

Based in what I can find, exactly, plain old bad luck. Also couldn't find any kind of follow up in my searches, I will absolutely share the details as soon as I can. Currently toyota canada has a case manager looking into the details, hoping they can do something to make a customer happy. Unique manufacturing failure calls for a unique rectification on their end in my opinion.

 

What's your point? Why wait so long to post? then post a whiner post.

 

There's been a few failure issues discussed over the past few months. All of the ones I've read about have been related to exhaust valves. Don't recall off the top of my head if it was the valve seat, or bending stems. If I remember correctly, it usually occurred on cylinder number 1, or cylinder number 5.

 

Main point was just to see if anyone had a similiar issue, how it was resolved and if there are any issues after the fact. Why post a whiny post about someone whining? Lol

 

When it first went to the shop they had a cylinder #3 misfire code then the next day kept getting different cylinder misfire codes. At this point, cylinder block, spark plugs, ignition coils etc are all being replaced. Managed to get in touch with Toyota Canada regarding warranty, looks like they are actually going to extend the powertrain warranty, which is great. Will keep updating as I get more specific info. Hoping all of this process can help someone else out.

 

V6 or 4cyl?

I'm curious why you expect some special warranty extension due to an issue? This is why you have a warranty to begin with and they are covering it under warranty from what it sounds like. IMO, if you want to always have a warranty on your vehicle then it's getting close to time to trade in your truck. It is 4-5 years old at this point, I'd be surprised if they extended your warranty...maybe on the work done, but not a general extension.

 

I would think an extended powertrain warranty for an engine failure is not an unreasonable request. Especially at 33,000 miles.

 

You won't get a response most likely. He's probably already blocked you...

But this have been popping up a little more lately. Still a small number compared to the number of these trucks on the road. I'm not sure anyone has a 100% answer why this is happening. It seems like something is happening to the valve seat, not allowing the valve to seal and ends up burning the exhaust valve because of that.

In rare cases I think the valve seat has actually dropped taking the engine out with it. I don't recall a valve ever actually dropping though. Just burning from not seating right on the seat. That's my non-expert opinion from the threads I've seen on here.

Seems like a new head usually fixes the issue in all but the worst cases. If Toyota fixes it and you get an extended warranty out of it think you did good. Nice to see them stand behind their product.

 

In a previous post he mentioned that they in fact are extending the powertrain warranty.

 

Sorry for your trouble. If you can, try to get as much information as to the cause of the issue.

 

I don't plan for the warranty to last forever obviously. I did purchase an extended warranty for 8 years or 120000 km, and toyota as a brand is based off of reliability and customer satisfaction, and being that this isn't a small issue in and out of the shop I think as a customer I have every right to look into some kind of rectification. In this case Toyota is extending the powertrain warranty specifically which of course I am thrilled about. Don't let any company give you the gears when you've spent hard earned money on their product, make a reasonable case and clearly worked for me this time.

 

Hahahaha oh I'm not worried at all, this is the internet here after all, I always assume you will get a few sassy people there looking to do their thing. Figured most people on here would be curious to learn more about this issue and my experience.
