Read both the articles in that link. Both are spot-on.

I was researching GWVR and both Axle weight ratings, and I was shocked at how little this is discussed on the overland forums and the other Toyota forums. I feel like this is the most import aspect of planning a modified "Rig". However, it's almost never talked about.

Then there is the obsession with 34+ tires. Overlanders outside of the US almost never have anything larger than 33's. Overlanding is not rock crawling.

    Let's face the facts.

70-80% of the enthusiasts in America buy mods primarily for an aesthetic value.

Light bars and lifts because they look cool. -15 wheels with 35s because of the nice stance. Rock sliders and Armor because "I saw that picture on instagram". Roof Top Tent because "I can get more followers with this picture".

There's nothing wrong with this either.

However, when I sold my Tacoma, the buyer had a WRX (import guys switching to Tacomas seems to be a trend). During the test drive, I explained all the buttons in the cab including the locking rear-diff. He didn't know what that was. I told him that a rear-diff was sorta similar to LSD he most likely had in his WRX. He responded with "What's a LSD". I didn't know what to say because his WRX was clearly modified. I thought for sure he would know what a LSD was and its function. If he didn't know the basics, how can I explain what ATRAC is?

The guy was my age (late 30s). Most likely he had a honda Civic SI or Integra back in the day. It's that same crowd that is jumping into the Tacoma trend.

love my taco. his comments didn't hurt even as close to as bad as his own vasectomy recovery was-- although I can't speak from experience.

For the record. I really don't think you are a dick at all. I was just trying to make a point that a salacious/incendiary headline detracts from the point of rest of the message. :)

OP, I want to thank you for bringing Mr. Siler into my life. I have since read up about this and can safely say that I am now prepared to ... as he writes ... "lead a more exciting life."

    Link: https://www.wessiler.com

"His testicles are the subject of Glenn Beck’s most recent book."

From a New York Times profile on the "new men" who carry pocket knives:

"In the right hands, pocketknives can be more than fashion accessories (they can also be illegal to carry, depending on local laws).

Consider Wes Siler, 34, a Los Angeles-based blogger for the outdoors website IndefinitelyWild, who said he reached for his to help a man at the site of a car crash. “I used the pocketknife to smash the window and cut the seatbelt and pull him out,” Mr. Siler said.

And when he’s not playing action hero? “If I’m eating a steak in a restaurant and the knife isn’t sharp enough,” he said, “I’ll pull my knife out.”

That’s a nice summary. Thanks for doing the legwork. It’s really fun seeing men who are bumping up against their midlife discover radical shit like pocket knives being useful for cutting things. I can’t wait until he finds out about beer tasting good with Mexican food.
