Hey guys, looking for a system to mount my recovery boards on the rood rack.
A thought i have is to install a plywood sheet , hold it with rook rack clamps like this
    71Q9li3EoUL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

and use it as a base to install quick fists and the recovery boards, jerry cans, etc....

For the recovery boards, there is systems like this
    51dAZQsd5bL._AC_SL1000_.jpg

Do you guys know if any other clamps under 50$ per set that i can use for the recovery boards?

I picked up some blue real maxtrax last summer since i don't think i will be mounting my winch to the new truck, nice to not have the standard orange that is so common! when i ordered my other choice was pink due to low stock where i ordered.

i am looking at having a bungy cord also , specially when i need the tracks in the snow, and keep using them every x minutes. That way i wont lose the nuts,
it would be a pain o remove and replace the nuts all the time.

    +1

I have a cheep set of China-Maxx's, pretty much accept the fact that after a couple uses in the cold they are gonna be cracked.

They are all made of Nylon, Nylon is not UV stable, they have to add UV stabilizers to the base resin, and it's pretty expensive compared to the resin itself so they won't use a lot.

Lol the overlanders with them on public display will be disappointed when the outer one is a lot lighter coloured than the inside one, means the plastic is breaking down.

Also at -10c unless extra plastisizers are added, Nylon becomes brittle, (why certain types of electrical wiring can't be done in temps lower than -10c)

But then for it to be good at -10c and below it's not very rigid at all at 20c and very soft.

Then add all the corners that are too sharp, otherwise known as stress risers.... snap crackle pop when cold.

You can also get Nylons with either long or short strand fibreglass embedded in it, but I have not see any that appear to be using that material. Would be better in the cold.

Even then, they would have to be hidden from the sun. Pretty much all plastics degrade from UV.

We should look into what the Russians are using...
well the ones without Sherpas ...
they'll have "cost effective" stuff that will survive their craziness in the snow....

Nope never mind, googled it, all that comes up in Russia is stuff about..... bigger tires....

I used Unistrut which you can get from Electrical supply places for about $25-30 for 10 feet for the channel and then used Unistrut Spring Nuts with all-thread (threaded rod which you can get in 3 or 10 foot lengths (10' is under $20) for real cheap in all sorts of sizes, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" being the most common at the electrical supply places)

to make an adjustable rack between the cross braces in the back of my truck.

So two pieces of about 8-10" long all thread go through the traction boards and a couple washers with wing nuts on top hold the boards down.

I think Home Depot calls it "Super Strut" but there are all sorts of different brackets and rollers and fastening stuff for it.

    There you go...

    https://www.homedepot.ca/search?q=superstrut#!q=superstrut

and from a more industrial source gives you and idea of the different types of Unistrut out there

    https://www.fastenal.com/product?query=unistrut+&fsi=1

and all the different neat stuff for it...

    https://unistrutstore.com/1-58-metal-framing.html

This stuff is the Grown mans Mechano set...

You want to build anything modular and adjustable that looks professional and won't break the bank... (well some of the brackets are pricey)

I do have a good relationship with one of the advisors there but no matter what the reception is like the workmanship behind the door lacks. Their 'master' tech is ok but any level down seems dodgy. I can be the only one getting shoddy work >25% of the time.

you can get your hands on some cheaper u-bolts for like $3 and drill a hole into the middle of it and add in a 6" threaded rod and a wing nut like this; https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/hillman-zinc-plated-u-bolt-with-nuts-0611952p.html#srp
    5nPjG7S.jpg
    4348C18F-61F0-4247-BE50-C7B636E8A598.jpg
you can find a 1" fender washer here; https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/hillman-fender-washers-stainless-steel-1611760p.html#srp
the above is basically how my rear pod lights are mounted to the backrack but i used 2" sqaure ubolts and doubled up on the nuts (the pandemic hit and heading nylon lock washers wasn't easy so i never did it. I might just grab a set now since the stores are open)
    upload_2021-2-26_9-5-16.jpg

Wing nut can be replaced with nobs like this from Amazoom.
    81F23oyl8yL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

    IMO i'd use a rivnut tool (i have one) and set one into the cross plate of the U-bolt and use of one the threaded handle screws liek this;
    https://www.amazon.ca/uxcell®-Clamping-Screw-Shaped-Thread/dp/B07NVLMG8X?ref_=Oct_s9_apbd_otopr_hd_bw_bDir5jH&pf_rd_r=0NE1R7CAXKT3V17382DD&pf_rd_p=cf0a7d23-8772-5c34-92a3-802ac2ae7d85&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-10&pf_rd_t=BROWSE&pf_rd_i=12572539011&th=1
    514yi2L32bL._AC_SL1100_.jpg
that way, when you remove the max tracks for storage, you can leave the U-bolts behind and it'll be flush with the truck. but might be a pain in the arse putting the tracks back on the truck since you need to line up the bolt
    :notsure:

I heard that from another member of our group. His boards broke really quickly on cold temps.

I am glad I can store mines inside the truck all the time when snow wheeling.
Perhaps that's the sacrifice we may have to do in cold temps: store them inside
