Seized the engine on my 07 taco today. It started knocking and game me the oil light. I put 2L of oil in then limped about 1km back to the gas station. I started it up the light was off still had the knock. drove it about a minute up the road decided it was a very bad idea, turned it off, and had it towed. tried to start it and found it seized. Can I salvage this engine? Is it toast? It did not seize while driving. I'm planning on putting a used engine in it for about $3500-$3700cad.
Is it possible to un-seize and fix it? :help:

    Anything is possible.
The problem is, finding someone to do the rebuild CORRECTLY.
If you are paying someone to do a rebuild, it can get expensive quick.
Labor on a rebuild is probably A LOT more than a used engine swap.

I am curious, what is the mileage on your truck?
And have you ever experienced any oil consumption or leaks (that you knew about)?
    Did the engine sound “different”?

I’ve heard the Oil Light doesn’t come on until around 4-5psi.
At that point, you’re already in trouble if your at anything over an idle.

At idle these trucks can be in the single digits. But they should be around 40+ psi cruising speeds.

The truck just hit 326k. I bought it at 317. The engine sounded the same but with a loud ticking/knocking sound.

When I limped it up to the gas station the oil light turned off briefly when I accelerated and would flicker.

Where I am a used engine is about $3500

Tomorrow I'm going to try to crank it with a breaker bar. is that a bad idea atm??

Only had it for 9k no oil consumption that I know of.

You can try, but I’m guessing you have a seized bearing.
What’s done it done, I don’t see how trying to turn it over MANUALLY will hurt anything.

Don’t try to use the starter. No need and damaging it too.
You’ll need it for the “new” engine.

For sure! Real bummed out about this. What if I replace the bearings? would anything else be damaged?

Depends on what’s seized. There’s could be scoring on the journal(s) and what ever part that is seized. Crank/Cam?

If your bearing gave up then the surface they are protecting is likely damaged. If it's a crank usually they can resurface them if the damage isn't too bad. Call around some rebuild shops in your area and look for ones with good reviews. I actually just bought a knocking taco with the 2.7 2tr. I got 2 different quotes one at 2350 and one at 2500 to rebuild it (USD)

Edit: I also want to add even if you can turn the motor over by hand, that is not going to solve your issue. I don't think it could make it worse but if it's seized not much you are gonna do to fix it with out repairing the damaged parts.

2 quarts is kind of a lot of oil?
When was the last time you had the oil changed? How many miles where on the oil?

I agree that is a lot especially considering these trucks hold like 5.5 quarts in the pan..

Ah shit, I think ima just throw a used motor in it with lower kms and either sell the old one or keep it for parts got the truck for 83xx so the cost of a motor is less than half the truck. I'm going to install it myself any tips?

yeah, I was thinking that but on the dip stick it said it was fine?

Edit: do you guys think it's worth it to get a new motor. The body is in excellent condition frame is looking good had a used transfer case put in about 30-40k ish ago.

Take your time on taking everything apart. I just took mine out last tuesday. Get lots of baggies and bag n tag every nut/bolt so you know where everything goes. You can also use tape on the electrical connectors and write what it goes to. Will make it a lot easier installing everything again. If you get a nice long ratcheting wrench that is how I got the top two bellhousing bolts from the trans out. Get a nice long prybar to get the motor unstuck from the transmission, that was probably the hardest part. Aside from that I recommend draining all the coolant and taking out the radiator, fan, and fan shroud gives you a lot of room.

As far as a brand new engine, what ever fits your budget and if you plan on keeping the truck a long time it may be worth it. If you aren't going to keep it for a long time just go with a used motor.

This. Did it have oil in it to begin with? Did you change the oil recently?

Im betting oil starvation due to lack of oil... if thats the case just get a used motor with less miles on it and call it good... and keep an eye on oil levels.

Yeah, it had oil, the light came on the same time the rod knock started. I changed the oil around 5k ago.

Here's the deal I got the truck for 83xx it's got a 6-inch lift newer transfer case complete new front end. everything else on it is mint! I'm planning on keeping this truck forever so I'm going to a used engine with lower kms. local wreckers quoted me $3500 to $5000.

Going to be a great learning experience. Looking at the engine it doesn't seem to have a stupid amount of hoses and wires.

I just found an engine for a good price with 192kms been tested and runs well I'm going to do the swap!

    Thanks for the replies guys!!!

Toyota does not sell new short blocks? With 197,000 miles on a used engine it hardly seems worth the trouble to change out. I'd never pay $3500 for a used engine with that many miles.
