Good point, it does have some flex when open, but that’s a decent moment arm and the whole truck moves too haha

It probably doesn’t help that my cab mount bushings are old and I can see the whole bed move, too. Half of it is probably that. I’ve got to replace those this weekend and redesign my front mounts

Problem is, you fix one thing and it creates a weak point down the line. If the bumper and swingout don’t flex, the 4 foot lever will cause the frame to flex and you would have to box the frame to prevent that from happening.

It’s always something. Just get it to where you are happy and it’ll be good

Ain’t that the truth. With all the weight back there and 35’s I have been getting some good rear jitters. Probably need to beef up the hangers and tie the frame together close to it.

I have to modify my decked system, which I may end up ditching and going back to my old larger pelican and getting a bedcage built that will help stiffen even better.
You saw the slo mo and how much my truck flexed that's with a plated frame and one extra cross bar. Unless you get crazy with redoing the frame you're not going to get rid of that flex.
Boxing the frame doesn't help as much as you'd think. Getting beefier crossmembers and getting them going in an X pattern over the Ladder or H pattern. Boxing really just helps that rail keep from twisting and distorting as bad.

valid point and you are definitely correct. Cutting the tire carrier out and cross cross bracing the frame in that location is part of my frame box plan, so I just lumped it in there without mentioning it.

Yeah that'll help a lot for the rear section. If you watch my truck in slo mo that Jonny posted a lot of flex is right at the cab and bed gap where the kickup starts. When we were boxing my frame I was trying to figure you how to add a X brace in that area but the gas tank is all up in the way.

RADAR CHECK: Rain is widespread early this morning north of I-20, over the northern third of the state. The rain will slowly diminish later this morning, and by afternoon most of the state will be dry with showers near and north of the Tennessee River. Some thunder is possible today, but odds of severe storms are very low, and SPC has dropped the “marginal risk” for most of the state. The day will be mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 50s over the Tennessee Valley, and 60s and low 70s for the rest of the state.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: It looks like the warmest weekend so far this year with highs between 75 and 80 degrees. The sky will be generally cloudy tomorrow and Sunday, but the sun could very well peek out at times. A few isolated showers can’t be ruled out, especially over the Tennessee Valley, but most of the weekend will be dry as the surface front will be up near the Tennessee state line. Heavy rain is possible for parts of Arkansas and Tennessee, north of the front.

NEXT WEEK: The front will drift southward early in the week, and periods of rain and a few thunderstorms are likely Monday through Tuesday night. The European global model continues to hint that strong storms are a possibility by Tuesday evening, but it is too early to determine if there will be a significant severe weather threat. Rain could heavy at times, with rain totals in the 2-4 inch range possible. Then, dry air begins to return Wednesday, and for now we expect dry weather Thursday and Friday. Highs through the week will be mostly in the 60s, and we still see no sign of any sub-freezing lows for the next 7 to 10 days across Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: The Buffalo Creek disaster occurred in the Buffalo Creek Hollow of Logan County in West Virginia. A coal slag dam on the Middle Fork of Buffalo Creek burst, sending a fifty-foot wall of water down a narrow valley killing 125 persons and causing 51 million dollars damage. Three days of rain atop a six-inch snow cover caused the dam to break.

ON THIS DATE IN 2008: Three EF-1 tornadoes touched down across parts of Jefferson, Shelby, and St. Clair counties during the pre-dawn hours. Straight line wind damage was reported across parts of East Alabama as well.

It’s pretty ridiculous how weak these frames are. But the majority of Tacoma owners don’t give a rip about that, so I guess it’s okay to Toyota.

Getting a fuel cell or exocage are probably the only ways to stiffen it in the location you are taking about. But if you get a fuel cell, you might as well 4 link the rear.......

    It’s a downward spiral skip

All truck manufacturers have "flimsy" frames it helps with NVH which is their concern. All they gotta do is protect the occupants, tow from a central location and drive down the road. All of them are built with the ladder construction so they all have that flex.
I'll never link my truck not with IFS. I think that's a point of actual diminishing returns. I've been thinking of the JD fab cell and positioning it where I can still take advantage of some triangulation. Plus the added capacity will be a lot nicer for trips. I'd get another 140 miles or so before needing to fill up.

I hear that. doing a 3 link in the rear of a Tacoma would only remotely make sense if you did the work yourself. There is not enough of a difference to make up for how much it would cost.

I think a LT front and 3 link rear would be pretty sweet to push what a Tacoma is capable of. Also, the ride quality would be on point.

Yeah it all depends. I'm not a fan of 3 links like at all especially if you are going to the trouble to put a cell in the truck why not triangulated 4 link. Everyone seems to think 3 links are the bees knees. The front makes a little more sense due to other interferences. I haven't seen a rear 3 link that is impressive enough to warrant ditching leafs for. As far as ride get stuff set up right or wrong they both can ride really well or like garbage.

You gonna have to cut the stock one out and fab up a beefier one.

I said 3 link and meant to say 4 link. No point in doing a 3 in the rear if you get a fuel cell. A rear 3 link isn’t a bad setup though.

There are a lot of factors that lead to a 3 link making the most sense on the front of the majority of rigs though.

already seen that latch, not enough play to make me switch out latches its not an issue. Very little. Its honestly an issue of me just needing to tighten up the latch a little more.
