Another transfer and diff fluid change question....

I have a 2013 DCLB Sport 4x4. My truck is now out of warranty so I'll be doing the fluid changes myself from here on out. I've read every one of the threads on this topic and my only hang up is the mixed info on needing to add modifiers to the transfer case. I plan to use Mobil 1 75/90 in all three (front and rear diff and transfer case). I've read that I do and don't need to add modifiers to the transfer case. Confirmation would be much appreciated. I know there is always brand debates but the Mobil 1 seemed to be a solid choice.

75w-90 gear oil in front n rear and tcase no modifiers outside of packaged LSD additives in most gear oils never an issue, tcase always goes right in.

 

Any of the modern GL-5 75w90s will do the job for both diffs and the TC.

I prefer a synthetic to allow for a little flexibility in fluid change time (I.e. I don’t worry about driving 40k rather than 30k, etc.) YMMV.

 

Toyota wrote a book about it. Page 460 of your owner's manual says no.

I'm not a big fan of Walmart, but their Super Tech Synth 75W90 gear fluid is super affordable and has great reviews.

 

I was just looking for other opinions. Just like other truck maintenance that's discussed on here, there are always options outside of the manual.

Agreed. Although, the manual will have the specifics for API grade, viscosity and quantity. Anything that meets or exceeds the specs is perfect.

 

Hello all. I just made my account to post in this thread, longtime lurker.
Just bought my first Tacoma, same as the OP, at 59K miles, and figured this was the perfect time to ask questions on this topic.
I have very little knowledge of the mechanics of a vehicle and the most maintenance I've done is an oil change.

for both the Transfer case and differentials? Like literally the same oil?

 

Yup. Buy 6 quarts, 1.6 in the front diff, 1.4 in the tcase and 3 in the rear axle.

This thread reminds me.... i need to get fluids for front,tcase,rear,trans fluid change out at 120k miles coming up soon.

Thank y'all so much. I love this vehicle, but having an old 2007 Hyundai as my first car, this truck is a way different beast. I've learned a ton in the past few weeks. I'll order 6 quarts soon, and attempt to do these fluid changes on my own. I've probably watched about 10 YT videos, and it seems fairly straightforward.

 

Spray some penetrating oil (pb blaster, aero kroil etc) on drain and fill plugs, especially on the front diff. Also make sure to take a pick and clean out any debris on the front diff allen drain n fill plugs so your allen wrench seats all the way in.

Lastly, ALWAYS loosen the fill plug before the drain plug. You want to make sure you can actually put oil in before draining stuff out haha.

Those sound like some decent tips.

 

Another point or 2.

Before you begin, swing by the Toyota dealer to get all the plug gaskets.

When putting the plugs back in, don't gorilla arm them. They are simply plugs, treat like the oil pan drain plug. Firmly snug. No leak, then tight enough.
