rear u joints

i seen a thread about u joints for the front shaft, i didnt want to side track from his topic. i went to look up u joints for the rear of my 05 reg cab 4x4. all anyone has listed is for 2wd, nothing is listed for 4x4. is there a difference in the 2wd u joints compared to the 4x4?

 

the 4x4 factory u-joints have Zerks so they can be greased.

 

i know they can be greased. mine are both shot on the rear shaft. they need to be replaced.

 

From what I have read, the non 4x4 u-joints do not have zerks, and cannot be greased, only replaced.

I would bet that the dimensions and functions are the same between 2wd and 4x4, but one is NOT serviceable. If I had to replace U-Joints on a 2WD I would want something that is serviceable.

 

the few places i checked had the option for serviceable and non serviceable for the 2wd, but that was probably becuase they were aftermarket parts.
i find it weird that all 3 places i have checked (hvent called the local dealer yet) all only have listings for 2wd tacos

 

Try NAPA, they carry u-joints listed for 4x4 - that's where I got mine.

 

good to know, they were next on my list but i never made it out there today.

 

What grease does everyone use? Will any lithium grease work or do you have to use Toyota's own grease. How often do you grease your fittings? How many are there and finally how would you determine if the U joints are shot.

 

i just replaced mine bought them from o'reilly auto mine i bought had the zerk fittings unlike the factory u joints that did not. I replaced all 3 since i took out the whole drive shaft it was easier that way.

so i went to NAPA, they said they only had a listing up to 2004. i tried carquest, autozone, pepboys, advance auto parts...all only up to 2004. even on several toyota parts webistes, they only list either up to 2004 or if they have 2005 its only for 2wd.

anyone know of a place online where i can get oem part numbers? i know of a few when i had my acura, didnt know if there was one for toyota.
