Looking at a ForestRiver Wolf Pup 16TS, dry weight of 3300 #. Will probably upgrade the tranny cooler. Running the 4.0 v-6. Any thought on the potential issues, or possible problems? Think the taco will pull it comfortably?

I wouldn't but I don't think these trucks tow worth a damn; plenty of folks here will disagree. I'm sure the automatic tows better than the six speed but they hit their GVWR quickly even though they are rated to tow a fair amount plus the rear is light and if a trailer that size gets squirrelly, especially in a cross wind like is common out west, it will probably get exciting. If I were going to tow a camper that size I would at least want a tandem axle setup and trailer brakes. JMHO

Bill do you have the factory tow package? If so those are rated to tow up to 6500 lbs.

Well that sucks! I can always fall back to the dodge Cummins, but really wanted to use the Tacoma.

Was also planning on adding the Hayden transmission cooler. It does have the 7 pin trailer plug, 5 speed automatic, and brake controller

It has heavier suspension, larger battery and has the harness built in for your brake controller. I plan on towing one larger than that but not over a hundred miles without an equalizing hitch. I have towed a lot of campers and never owned a dually or a Cummins diesel!!

If its factory tow package you already have the transmission cooler!

If you have the tow package, or upgrade everything equivalent you should be OK. You'll probably have to pack carefully with very little extra weight in the truck.

Two things to be aware of. #1, from your avatar it appears you're running oversize tires. That will effectively change your axle ratio reducing power. If they are over 32" you could have some issues. #2, your payload rating and GVWR are the true limiting factors. Payload is printed on a sticker on the drivers door jamb, but since your truck has been modified it is no longer accurate. You should actually weigh the truck then subtract that from posted GVWR. The remaining number is your true payload. That includes the weight of you, passengers, cargo, and tongue weight from the trailer.

A 3300 lb trailer will be around 4000 lbs loaded. That means 520 lbs of tongue weight (figure 13%). The payload of a stock truck is around 1100-1200 lbs. Subtract the 520 lbs tongue weight from true payload and that is how much weight you have left for passengers and cargo.

My truck has 1200 lbs payload, but I have a 180 lb cap on my truck leaving true payload at 1020 lbs. If I subtract 520 lbs from 1020 that leaves me 500 lbs. I weigh 220, my wife 140 leaving only 140 lbs for gear in my truck. I could pull a 4000 lb trailer, but would have to pack carefully. You need to find your true payload and do the math for your truck.

You will be just fine. “Comfortably” pull loaded trailer all the time and that is over 4K lbs.

My wife would kill me for saying this, but, that damn Cummins will pull anything and still get over twenty mpg. Regardless, do you recommend a particular equalizing hitch? I should just be able to plug in the controller to the wiring harness, right?

Bill check your owners manual and you will find all the info you need there. We towed and camped in a 17 ft TT all the way to Alaska and back to Iowa nearly 5,000 miles RT 1/2 ton Chev Silverado, with a Leer topper and no problems.

There are a couple of rules of thumb with towing. 1) Only tow about 80% of the rated capacity. 2) Use a weight redistributing hitch when the trailer weight is greater than 50% of the vehicle weight. That means if you want to tow comfortably and safely you should pull a max of 5,200 lbs (3rdgen = 6,500 x .80) or 4,800 lbs (2nd gen =6,000 x .80) and any trailer over 2,250 lbs(1/2 vehicle weight) should have a weight distributing hitch.

If your talking to me yes, 7 pin is 7 pin the brakes should work. You might not need an equalizing hitch, we did not have one on our Alaskan trip. Hook it up and take on a road trip, but more than likely its a good idea. I had ours installed at our local hitch place, was about $600 installed and setup.

PS My owners manual for my 2015 states 6,500 lbs.

I have one, from reading other threads, I thought they were saying you would need more. The taco does have a factory tranny temperature gauge also, so, I may not need one depending on the temperature

Your idea of comfortable and mine may be different.
That said, No. I wouldn’t consider it comfortable.
I don’t consider anything over 4K comfortable to tow.

You will need a Brake Controller.
You’ll also need to understand these truck make power further up in the rpm range.
Even with my utility trailer, I still tow in 4th (Auto Trans) at 65 mph.
And that is with less than 3,200 lbs.

I’ve towed just over 4K with a travel trailer. It was not fun at all.
Of course, This was in the foothills of East Tennessee where I live.

Anyone able to tell me how to reply to someone’s reply to me, without just sticking it in the thread? The wife tells me, I’m not too bright

Sadly, I have to cross the Rockies on every trip across Colorado. Trailer weight is supposedly 3200# without personal items.
