Will it do it. Yes. Will it be a comfortable, low stress ride like a full size truck? Probably not.

I guess I’ll try it, and adjust accordingly, or just shoot myself!

keep the trailer under 4k, youll be fine imo. Tons of people try to over tow with these things, but your numbers seem reasonable, even for the mtn west. You wont be doing much over 50 on those CO mtn passes, but thats better than gear hunting the whole time. Having the taco when you get to the destination will probably be way more fun that the full size!

Thanks, I won’t be racing anyone going up the mountains, just want to get there in one piece! After we’re there, I really wanted the Tacoma instead of the full size truck. Trailer will be our base camp from there.

I honestly think you'll be good. Just take it easy, and don't be in a rush. Your trailer is much smaller, lighter than mine and the Tacoma should tow it no problem.

I towed a 2021 Forest River No Boundaries NB 19.8. Comes in at #4000 dry and #5000 loaded.

I went from North County San Diego through Hemet, Lambs Canyon grade to Beaumont onto the 10 hwy ending up in Palm Desert. Then from Palm Desert, to Salton Sea, and camping in Borrego Springs. We dry camped for 3 nights then returned home via the S22 Montazuma grade (one of the steepest grades in SD county) through Pala back into North County SD.

This was my first trip towing with the Tacoma. I usually tow with my full sized 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L v8 LM7 engine.

I think the tacoma puts the power down better than the GMC. The 5 speed in the Taco has better gearing than the 4 speed in the GMC. The GMC for sure doesn't get pushed around as much as the Tacoma did especially in the high winds of San Grogornio & Morongo.

GMC has a bigger bed and bigger payload so I could have packed more stuff like firewood.

The Tacoma has a Hayden 679 trans cooler, which is an absolutely necessity to tow anything in the Tacoma. I saw trans temps of 221*F through Montezuma grade when it was only 58 *F outside.

From my experience, I think a Tacoma should tow your #3300 trailer no issue. Just have WDH and brake controller. Be smart about not rushing and enjoy the trip.

I love how on the taco forums Someone’s like “truck is rated for 6500, I want to tow 5k. That fine?” And everyone’s like “probably gonna die, but good luck! Make sure you upgrade everything and get a wd hitch, and do a bunch of excel spreadsheet math for the perfect weight allocation”

then on the Cummins forums it’s “truck is rated for 10k...I want to pull 17k, that fine?” And everyone goes “oh hell ya brother, just slap on some air bags and flip those tow mirrors out!”
Which, I mean, has some validity lol.

I may try that with the Cummins, heck probably have! But that’s my work horse. I’ll let you guys know if I arrive alive! Trailer is being built, and we’re about a month out from delivery. So I’ve got a little time to make preparations.

If you’ve ever experienced a heavy trailer on a slick pasture. (Slick anything really)
Then you’ll know what happens when a heavy trailer wants to keep going.
It’s pushes right trough the truck. Even with trailer brakes. If it’s slick, it want to keep going.

I don’t advocate hauling anything over manufacture rating.
And I’m my opinion, the Tacoma is definitely rated pretty high for what it is.
Plus the fact, you really need to run the engine higher in the rpm to keep up speed when towing on the upper end of the rated towing capacity.

Or, maybe a a big chicken.
Either way, if I had access to a Cummins.
I’d use it to pull a camper.

I’ve put in a lot of miles driving tractor trailers and cranes over the road, so I hear you on the Cummins, but, I really want to have the Tacoma when I get to the destination. If it doesn’t work, I guess, something will be for sale in the future!

Yeah, No harm in using the Tacoma to try it.You may be fine with it.
I guess maybe I have been spoiled by having access to a full size truck when I need one.

I’d imagine if you decide the Tacoma is not what you want for towing, you’ll wish you got a different/bigger trailer if you’re putting it behind a full size, let alone a diesel

Eh, I will absolutely blow over my 2500s tow rating, because that vs the higher rating of the 3500 is an arbitrary difference in rear springs and door sticker number. I’m not worried about the “legal” concerns everyone screams about.

"how much can I tow" has been beat to death on TW! If you have towed with a Cummin's diesel, then, you will likely not appreciate towing with the Tacoma. There is just NO substitute for having "MORE" truck when towing. Some trucks are designed and engineered to tow, Tacoma's are not. IMO

I have a Forest River Wolf Pup 16. Says dry weight 2700#

Mines a manual transmission, and I love it.

OP (Bill) you will be fine. Every time someone posts about towing people go berserk, doom and gloom citing laws that do not exist. I already posted about our trip to Alaska towing a trailer just about the same as yours. Take your time and enjoy. Yes trailer brakes work.... that is why you have them? Follow the towing guidelines in your owners manual and yes a WDH or equalizing hitch plus sway bars will make your trip safer.

BTW I love it when people jump in and post off the wall answers without reading the OP's post.

Well, I was able to stir up a hornets nest! I’ve towed a lot with a full sized diesel truck, but, this will be a completely different and new experience. There’s times we’ll just be camping in the back country with out the trailer and the full-size truck is just hard to get into some trails.
