Why do you like the SPORT hood?

I've seen the hood swap thread (300+ pages) and others. I get it, people like the look.

Does anyone actually do anything with the scoop to make it actually do something? :) I was asked by a pushy dealer that didn't have a new 2021 OR DBLCab available why I wouldn't buy his Sport model on the lot. Dude, I don't want a fake hood scoop. He didn't have anything to respond with.

Its unfortunate Toyota didn't have some performance intake option that made the scoop actually do something.

So why do YOU like the SPORT hood? Is it just looks or did you make it do something?

    :)

I simply just think it looks cool. Some people have attached a light bar too the front of the hood scoop. Seen a few Tacoma owners on here that actually made the scoop completely functional by connecting it directly to the intake.

I wish the scoop was inverted, so it was set into the hood, rather than proud of it. Then I could fill it with ice and put some beers in there on a hot day.

I don’t it’s useless, I’m used to a hood scoop being functional. But as for the esthetics it does fit pretty good with the look of the truck.

I have no idea why the scoop is so popular. It's about as useful as having really white teeth.

It is just one of a few, simple body line flourishes that synergistically contribute to giving our truck its overall irresistible character. Son owns two classic Ford trucks, son in law a current Power Stroke, and they both smolder with jealousy when around my Taco. Some on here desire a clean slate update, but Toyota got this truck's looks so right, and the hood scoop is part of that. The 1,2, 3 Gens endure and somehow stay relevant when others must necessarily throw up new body line gimmicks upon themselves in an attempt to out-macho their competitors and to maintain their market share, to the buying public's collective disdain. (I am reminded of Richard Pryor's famous line, "What's the matter bitch? It's just a little vomit.") Our little hood scoop and a few quarter panel creases by themselves simplistically trump all of their collective body enhancements. As a lifetime Chevy truck owner, still a '97 in the driveway, (and a used 2007 Ranger too that was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up) I look at the current GM attempts to attract buyers and marvel at what that thing has become? Same thing on the Ranger: its simple lines speak volumes about how a truck should look compared to its current re-think. There's more esoteric, unneeded plastic schlock bullshit on GM's current offerings. They don't know what they are anymore. Never seen GM trucks have such a sustained identity crisis. They are lost, wandering around looking for a new identity, confused, and are seemingly clueless to find themselves. They are kinda' like GM's equivalent to a club kid's first night out: their make-up is the wrong hideous, their codpiece is on backwards and they are walking on their pink boa. And don't even get me started on Ram and Nissan.

Our Tacos don't suffer from that identity crisis. We've owned my wife's '93 4Runner since, well, '93, and the '93's profile is STILL the definitive iteration of an SUV, its simple lines and profile the benchmark of what all the other SUVs have been trying to distill since then. Kinda like the 70's FJ is that segment's poster child. SAME FOR OUR TACOS in the small truck market. Twenty-five years from now the hood scoop version of our truck will be called to mind when people remember. That's what it does, that's what it will do.

Stick a light bar in the hood scoop and get on with life. Your neighbor wants your truck. It'll still be here in Revelations. We bought the right truck.

When I was walking the lot, the sport looked 1000 times better than the OR. That being said, the OR was the better bang for the buck when rational think was used, but I never was rational.

Uhh, GM got a little mileage out of this particular number, when iconic hood scoops are the subject. Repro's are available to fit everything but a shit-wagon and a Taco. Functional too! Just sayin'...:D

Yep, been doing GM performance since the early 70's. I like a tunnel ram as much as the next guy, but that scooped hood and others very similar to it bring to mind, in my mind at least, David Spade's late-70's mullet haircut in the movie Joe Dirt. My mind's eye inserts a mobile home behind the Camaro it's mounted to. Tell me now if my Sport's hood scoop is going to bring to your mind that same image 25 years from now. Because if it is going to, I'm gonna' go out there right now and take it off.

And you call that a GM hood scoop? I'll see your aftermarket '83 Camaro hood, and raise you a Pontiac WS-6 hood scoop:

Strangely, this one doesn't turn me off. Yet.

I'm indifferent to it I guess. I neither love it or hate it. I forget it's there most of the time.

As scoops go, they definitely got it right on that version Bill. Always liked the clean simplicity of your truck!

Makes the MGM look great and people get confused when they see an OR and a scoop.

On the turbo Hilux the scoop is functional. The inter-cooler lays on top of the engine, just below the open scoop.

All the sports are prepped for conversion kits.

What can I say.... I like the way it looks. I get that it isn’t functional. I also like other aspects of the Sport model. In particular, I prefer the ride characteristics and the color matched parts.

The hood scoop is about as functional as a TRD shifter, or fancy wheels, or stickers on your back window, or a lot of other non-functional appeasements. While it would be grand if it was a little bit functional, it is strictly for looks. If you like it great! If you don’t, then don’t buy it.

This one is a simple fix.

I don't know why people like the scoop. The scoop is a foreign turbo charged truck design cue. Most people don't like the design of the foreign trucks.
