Gonna see how it goes. I saw that method in the Whitelines thread. When I was a teenager, building BMX bikes and not having fancy tools or money, I built something similar to press bottom brackets into frames. Similar concept but probably no where as difficult as these sleeves/bushings

 

Cleaned her up a bit and installed a new dog on my 251 during lunch today (working from home has its perks). Warmer weather means she's ready to start ripping again. Dog's name is Spike

What did you do for getting the new ones in?

How'd ya go about getting the old ones out? I'll be doing this soon.

 

Air hammer the washers off, use drill bits (make sure you have a ton) and drill out the rubber bushing. Once you have a good amount of holes drilled in the bushing, use a hole saw to get the sleeves out. Take the air hammer with a wide spade bit and fold the collar inward to compress the sleeve. Take a small tapered bit and start pushing the sleeve out.

You can also make relief cuts in the metal sleeves using a sawzall. The air hammer made it pretty easy. It totaled about 3 hours; first control arm took about 1.5 hours (gathering all the various tools from around the shop and developing a method of attack) and the last one took 45 minutes and then 20-25 minutes to press the new ones in and clean up.

 

I was going to use super lube to lube em up, what did you use?

 

To lube what?

The bushings come with little packets of grease for you to use.

 

That in the directions, or a trick of the trade?

HA don’t JB weld them. There should have been little packets of cloudy white grease in the box. It’s super tacky grease.

There was a packet. Since I was at the shop, they had stuff there and I saved the packet for the sleeves
