what is the highest score that you can get on the asvab? also when i was talking to the recruiter he said that i need to choose atleast 3 different jobs that i would want so that they can put me in anyone that they can. or can i ask for just one job and wait for that one until it has a opening?

When I was in basic we had a guy that would hide in his footlocker. He got the early ticket home. The night of Black Friday we had two guys go UA. They got caught at Denny's right outside of MCRD San Diego. Its funny because one of them made it through later (after he got dropped from our training cycle) and we met up later at our first unit. We became brothers... and to this day I can't help but send him pictures of a Denny's from time to time. :D

I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Was it easy? hell no. Was it fun? hell yes. There is nothing - NOTHING - in this world like walking into the bar after the Marine Corps Ball. Take a couple buddies still in their Dress Blues and watch the panties drop... ;)

A 99 is the highest AFQT you can get but you will have line scores that can get in to the 130's they ask you to pick three so they can tell you that they gave you one of your choices but tell them you have to hava a CD they will make it happen

I might be wrong about the TOW part. I do know that he is on a year tour as "manning a missle on a truck or something" according to his Mom. She wasn't sure so I guessed a TOW gunner.

You missed the point. The point is that he is highly educated and skilled and the Marines wasted that. If the OP wants a certain job he might want to consider a branch that will guaruntee that job and not waste his skill and talent like the Marines did with my cousin. Over the holidays I heard from the family grapevine that he is gettng out when he gets home. Their loss.

Whatever you decide, get it in writing. I was lucky that I got what I wanted but knew many others who thought they were getting one thing and ended up serving chow for 4 years. There are many good recruiters out there that are honest and we'll be straight with you. There are others that are only recruiting because they have to and will tell your whatever they have to to get you in and meet their quota.

Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

I've been a Marine for 12 years now. I got the job that I wanted right off the bat. No issues. I see that you are wanting to be a Mechanic. That's what I am. But I work on F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets. Ask any of these grunts that are preaching infantry this infantry that. When they are really in some trouble. That Close Air Support wins every time. When the bad guys hear my jets over head they don't hide in their holes. We are due to be in one of the "Stans" in the spring. I have deployed alot and seen alot of places. Some nice, some not so nice. Sure you won't be on the front lines with rifle in hand which I give my infantry brothers alot of love for doing their job. But we see some action. When I was in Kuwait we were missile attacked on a daily basis. My sister Squadron just got back from Afgan. They were mortared all the time.
The down side is we work our asses off. 6 days a week. There is a day shift and a night shift that puts in 10-16 hour workdays. Well this is just a little insight on a different side of the Marine Corps. Good luck to you and what ever you decide to do.

I would say you missed the point. The Marines will put you in an MOS that the Marines feel your skills and THEIR needs match up. The Marines is like a well-oiled machine because THEY put bodies where THEY want them; not the other way around. Is it likely you might wind up in an MOS you WANT? Sure, enlist for a long-term enlistment which give the Marines the ability to train you properly. I enlisted for 2 years right out of High School and the Marines simply "dropped-kicked" me into an MOS.

So is what your saying is that stupid people should be on missile systems?sorry to say that the Marines are only accepting people with AFQT's above 50 right now so this I the highest quality we have put in in a long time. If he's an infantry man he signed a SOU Saying he will be one it said infantry option on the top so he can blame his recruiter all he wants, but he signed it. If the OP wants to be a mechanic he signs the one for mechanics that's just how it is..

Coast Guard has been fun as hell for me. Just passed 12yrs. Got a wife, kid, chopper, tacoma, own and rent out three houses, and best of all.........I don't get shot at, I see chicks in bikinis all summer and, Im home everynight. I also get paid the same amout of money as the sailors who are out in the ocean half the year and the same amount of money as the soldiers who are in the deserts and jungles.

Yea, people make fun of us all the time and have all kinds of jokes. Were called puddle pirates and so on. One guy asked me if you had to be 6 feet tall to jon the Coast Guard. I said "No, why?" he replied, "So when your boats sink you can walk to shore". Hahahaha I actually liked that one.

Look into it. If you get on the list now you might be able to join next Sep. I have a friend who is a CG recruiter and I have known him for 12 yrs now. He said I takes about a year. I remember when it took only a month.

Because Grunts are just dumb ground pounders? Whatever. It takes a person with a good head on their shoulders to understand all the different weapon systems, understand and deploy small unit tactics, work with CAS, and cover all the different disciplines of training that the Infantry does on a daily basis. The Infantry has one of the hardest jobs in the military because of the wide variety of responsibilities placed upon them. Wasted talent? How about actually providing a challenge. I did a contract as Infantry. I didn't get out because it wasn't a challenge - I got out because I didn't like the way the Marine Corps was becoming. It is becoming all about the paperwork, no drinking, and no Tats. The damn Navy is calling to many of the shots.

I have been in the infantry for nearly 12 years (10 of those 12 were in "victor" units or deployable units). I have no regrets for the MOS choice that I made. Sure there have been bad times where I was like "f**k this s**t, I am getting out." There were also great times that vastly outnumbered the bad times. Let me just say that the Marine Corps is not for everybody.

If you can't handle it, then do your time and get the f**k out. Go find something you love and are good at. Not something that just pays the bills because believe me, the pay isn't that great when you start out.

Back in my day, the Marine Corps still had a few draftee's serving and most but not all were grunts. We also had guys that were one gavel away from being sentenced to time in prison until the Marine Recruiter interceded and asked the judge to allow the defendant to join the Marines which, more often than not, were allowed to "join" in lieu of jail time.

I spent the first 5 years as medic in a infantry unit and then switched over to infantry for the last 8 years. I've been deployed to a combat zone just under 5 of the last 10 years and still in. You are preaching to the chior.

The only times that being a REMF sounded good was when it was pouring down rain doing patrols during training field ops (which was pretty much every time we went to the field). Anyone on here at C Pen during the rain that took out part of Basilone Rd back in '05? I was in the field because our Capt thought it was a great chance to do some night training with FNGs, NVGs, and live ammo. It was epic.
