I’ve searched the internet and the stickies here and keep coming up with conflicting info.

Truck in question is my dads 05 4x4 4cyl. No lift or oversized tires. It’s geared way too high. Are there optional gear ratios from the factory? What options are there for re gearing it?

What conflicting info are you finding? Toyota has different gear ratios depending on which model truck it was and there are several after market companies that make gears.

You’ll need to determine what kind of performance you want and understand what to expect to determine which gear ratio to use.

Some things I’ve found indicate they all have the same ratio. I’ve never found any info on what ratio comes in what truck configuration. Is there any way to tell what ratio it has other than jacking it up and counting revolutions... like an axle code or something?

He uses it around the farm a lot. Driving through the woods, fields, etc. He’s old and drives slow on the highway. I doubt he ever goes over 65, so what’s too low for most would be good for him.

    I believe the 4cyl 5sp 4x4 came with 4.10 ratios.

2nd gen 6-lug Tacomas come in 2 axle ratios. Either 3.73 for the 6 cyl or 4.10s for the 4cyl. regardless of model.
OP, be fortunate that your 4 cyl came with 4.10s instead of 3.73s.

It doesnt feel anything like the 410s in f350 I've driven. I bet it's 473s. Is there a sticker somewhere that tells me or do I need to jack it up?

You are comparing an F350 motor with 4.10s versus a 2.7 cyl with 4.10s? Not a fair assessment.

I know that there is an axle gear ratio lookup based on your door jamb ID.

Switch to 3.73s with a 4 bangaranger and let us know how that works out. You’ll be lugging that engine in every gear, and will become very familiar with carbon buildup.

You can’t “feel” 4.10s on their own. The final drive ratio is determined by diff ratios, transmission gear ratios, transfer case ratios etc and the F350 has a completely different power train.

Gotta be trolling because this info can be found in a couple of seconds.

Reading this fellow's other posts, his "dad" burnt up the clutch, his "dad" can't get out of 4lo, and now his "dad" looking for a lower gear ratio to drive around on the farm. Seems that this fellow just doesn't know how to use his truck. If he burnt the clutch with 4.10s, you can bet your ass that clutch will be smoked with 3.73s

My “dad” is getting older and his driving skills have gone downhill. He tows more than he should with this truck and doesn’t really care that he’s overworking it. I remember when I was a kid, he had a 2wd Datsun truck that he would haul a ton of feed in on a regular basis. It hit the bump stops at around 3-400lbs and he just piled it on there. He’s hard on stuff. Sitting at a red light on a hill, instead of pushing the clutch all the way in and holding the brake he just rides the clutch. I told him he shouldn’t do that. He still does.

well, based on that I would not be looking at taller gears.

I’m not looking for taller gears. I’m trying to figure out what gear ratios were available from the factory to determine what he has so I can look into options for lower gearing. Looks like it has 4.10s and there are no factory options for lower gears.

Its definitely factory 4.10. You can go all the way to 5.29 in these axles. Running factory tires if you want to go lower i would say 4.88. 4.56 wouldn't be enough change to justify IMO

Browse on East coast gear supply. They have fully assembled thirds you can just swap out with yours if you're able to do that yourself. If not you should have a local ring and pinion shop or offroad shop that can swap gear sets
