    Probably, but why? Do you need OBD2 compliance? You'd be better off, in my opinion, doing an LSx swap.

    And this coming from a Supra owner (MKIII).

    A swap to the 4.6L would be a better option.

    My Supra has been “under construction” (haha!) for the past 16 yrs. Meaning that jobs and life got in the way and it’s been sitting untouched.

    Also, MKIII IS 1986.5-1992, so a 7M motor not a 2jz. My 7M was dead reliable. The 2jz is very much the same.

    Keep in mind that an in-line 6 is longer than whatever motor you’ve currently got in there. ;)

    A 1jz will be less expensive and has similar potential to the 2j.

    What kind of power are you looking to make?

    An LS swap is a good option as well, but if you are going for big power keep in mind that you'll want to have a lot of money set aside.

    The 7M was a good motor once you replaced the head gasket. In the Japanese market they used the 1JZ, so it should be a pretty easy swap if you give up on the 7M. The R154 should bolt right up to it.

    I was in that boat. My 87 sat forever waiting for me to finish it. I set a date goal, worked on it every day after work and weekends, occasionally waking up at like 1am asleep under it with a ratchet in my hand. Finally the day came when I turned the key, couldn’t stop grinning.

    Broke my heart when a truck ran into it & totaled it.

    2jz = 3.0L
    1jz = 2.5L

    I'd take the 2jz, especially since parts are more readily available stateside.

    The 7M is pretty bulletproof with a few mods. I've got a metal headgasket, ARP studs torqued to 75ft lbs, (original was 52 ft lbs and wayyy to low, hence the BHG that plauged the 7M) I won't ever swap a 1jz. If I swap it'll be a 2jz or LSx. In the meantime, it's all irrelevant because it's been sitting for 15yrs and I don't have a shop at my house yet so...

    That's awesome. I'm nowhere near that point right now and have too many other things that would stop me from spending time on it. Baby on the way, my wife, the dog, house, property, etc... I'll finish it one day. I was in that same boat though. When I first built the car I worked an evening shift. I'd get off at midnight and wrench on the car. Same feeling, grinning ear to ear when I first turned it over and it came roaring to life. (quite literally, open divorced wastegate downpipe is a wicked sound!)

    I'm well aware of all the bits and pieces available for these cars, less so in the past few years as I'm out of the game for a while but I've been a Super Mod on Supramania for probably 15yrs. I've got a crapload of rare and JDM parts, original Greddy tubular turbo manifold, JDM Recaro interior, Group A oil pan (which is pretty rare, I believe there were only 11 Group A MKIII Supras built), amongst many other parts.

    I'll finish it one day, but until then it all remains boxed up and safely stored.

    Correct.

    Yeah, the factory torque specs were based on a different type of head gasket.

    Suit yourself. You could have a 1JZ in there up and running for about a third of what you'll pay for a 2JZ, with basically the same power potential. They have the same bore, and the 1j has a shorter stroke.

    But, if you have the extra money and want to make over 1000 horsepower, the 2J is a good platform.

    You'll pay more for a proper LS swap as well.

    Really, if you're not going for over 600 horsepower, the 7M should be fine.

    It's a shame to hear about that car sitting there collecting dust. At the same time, I wish I had never sold mine.

    Yep, still too low of a torque setting.

    The reality is, I'll probably be a 7M guy for life. People laugh at it, but as you know it's a very capable motor. I'm not 20 anymore, I don't need ridiculous power. When done, I'll be pushing a clean 600ish rwhp, lots of area under the curve. Nice fat torque.

    Not interested in swapping anything else. It's a shame for sure, but once I build a shop I'll get to work on it. I've got 90% of the parts I need to be finished with it once and for all. There are, however, or at least used to be when I was really into it, plenty of 600+ hp 7Ms running around. I don't think I'll ever sell. I do have to sell my e36 M3, though... Tired of watching that sit around, too.

    You guys send me down a 2jz rabbit hole...

    Old Toyota engines are cool.

    I really really really miss my 87 long bed 4x4 Toyota truck. 22r engine, big carburetor and exhaust. Best truck ever.

    At least you have plans for it! 600WHP is fast as hell to me.

    The 7M is a fine platform, especially since you dealt with the head-gasket. I thought I read the original torque spec was based on an asbestos head gasket or something weird like that, but then they used copper or aluminum.

    I think it's cool to use a motor that belongs in the car. That's why I like the 1J idea, also.

    Feel free to post a build thread here when you get around to it. I'll be happy to read it!

    Both are good engines. The E36 M3 is a super fun chassis too. Been slowly transforming my E36 328is to M3 spec. Whoever gets it, will be a happy owner.

    It's a crazy fantasy, but thought about the 1FZ in this chassis. Shiiiiit

    Minus the oil pan, and height of the 1FZ and 3RZ/2TR, those would be great contenders in the Tacoma or E36. They can be made to handle a lot of boost. The transmission becomes the hold back. But with the 2016+ or more recent ( clarification is needed) 2TR manual, their transmissions are very stout.
