no lie as i was typing my last response I was imagining installing that on my truck and wondering if it was going to be extremely bright like that to the point where i may get pulled over by law enforcement lol

If you order them from hotshotoffroad like meso suggests and use the bdmeso discount code you can get them for $55 a piece. From what I remember I paid close to $180 for the housing alone from meso. I got the BDCAM4 model. So the BD3 model is prob a little cheaper. I think $260 is a pretty fair deal especially if his headliner is getting ruined from rain water. It’s $165 minimum for the lights alone.

How bright was the entire third brake light set up? One thing setting me back from jumping on this right away is getting a speeding ticket like 4 days ago. Would suck to get pulled over bc the rock lights in the 3rd brake light are too bright. Are they DOT/SAE compliant? Or are specifically for "off road use only?" I looked at something out of curiosity from Evil Offroad and it used BD lights but the website said strictly for off road. Like I guess those were the kinda third brake lights that are meant for mall crawler type trucks. I'm in the city constantly

They are bright, and it’s not DOT compliant. Its definitely not brighter than some other manufacturers OEM brake lights though, but since the BD version clearly doesn’t have a diffuser on it, it’s a dead giveaway that it’s not DOT compliant, but will your average (or above average) traffic cop realize that? not in my experience. Also since no diffuser it’s very focused light when you look at it, so it looks brighter than it actually is when you look directly at it.

I don’t think it’s something you’d get pulled over for. Maybe if you get pulled over for speeding or another reason, I could see the cop writing a second ticket for the lights if he’s a dick.

I've gotten pulled over twice solely for license plate lights. Once being out, once being the wrong color. If they'll pull you over for one, they'll pull you over for another.

In fact I wish they'd crack down on bright ass lights in general, especially LED brake lights. (even some factory ones sear the retinas)

If someone's brake lights are bright enough to cause you issues... Maybe you're the one that's too close?

Not an idiot, it’s definitely as tricky as it seems. Obviously the design has changed and the holes for wiring the BD rock lights aren’t directly behind the light but rather below the light. 2 of the 5 are completely obscured on the backside.

So, is there a trick to pulling the wires through? I tried a zip tie but it was binding when I taped on the wire and tried to pull it through.

You couldn't rub 3 brain cells together, why should I?

If I have a flashlight and shine it in your eyes at 4 feet, and you step back 4 feet, did you solve the problem?

I just stumbled in here. But that logic doesn't follow. Shouldn't I be stopping people from buying them? I really don't care that much (I love LEDs), but when I saw the design, I couldn't help but be skeptical of the designers' full consideration of their effects.

    Clearly, you didn't even try.

Brake lights are typically red. Lookup the sensitivity of the human eye to different colors of light. A flashlight is typically white, which contains many more (trust me it's a lot, like an infinite number) colors than red.

Educate yourself on the inverse square law.

Light reflection and direction makes a difference too.
A flashlight has optics which concentrate all the light and direct it into a "hotspot" which yes...pointed directly at your retinas would suck. However, Baja rock lights do NOT use optics. Which means the light is more spread out or "flood". Yes, they are still bright..but not as much as you think as it's not directing back at you in a concentrated beam. Flood pattern is much better for a brake light as it's visible from greater angles.
