Front and Rear Brake Wear Question

Hey,

I just got my truck serviced and i noticed that they noted the life left on the front and rear pads. I notice that the rears have worn significantly more then the fronts (at least i think, 20%). Is this typically or am i being dumb, i don't think i ride my brakes but maybe i do.

expect the rear drums to last 3 front pad changes. and btw, some people are getting over 70k on their fronts....

 

thanks for the replies,that is what i thought. i got to ask my pops since he took in for me since i couldn't this time.

 

Don't feel bad the dealership I go to told me my front an rear pads were almost gone at 39,000 miles an wanted to charge $190.00 per axle. I bought some pads an went home. When I pulled the wheel off an looked at the pads they look almost new, not even 1/4 of the way worn. Moral of the story is don't always put a 100% faith in the dealership.

 

Drums in the rear?

I'll have to check but I want to say Shoes typically are not made to the same thickness that pads are. New Pads are usually a little thickers than new Shoes, so even when the shoes get worn a little bit you might get a 6/32's reading in the rear and 9/32's on the front pads.

Whenever a shop tells you you need work done, tell them you want to be taken out to the vehicle and shown. If any place ever acts defensive about letting you look at what they are rec'ing to replace, tell them to put your shit together and back it out.

 

x2. and like everyone else said, the rears, especially drums, will last 2-3x longer than your front pads.

 

that is what i was thought and why the difference really jumped put at me as strange. I figured that they are trying to set it up to change the brake soon than needed, and i will definitely ask to look at everything before anything gets changed. Once again thanks i needed a quick reality check

 

yep,i got 93,000 on the stock pads with about 4/32 left.

 

The more threads I read about shops, man my shop was top notch back when I worked there, we always told the truth even if we were not going to make money.


Wish shops everywhere were like that.

 

yeah,im glad that i do all my own work and have access to the tools and shop to do it..scum bag shops rip lots of people off these days.

 

I can tell I wont be going to any shops.

Only stealership when its a warranty problem.

 

Just replaced the front pads at 172K,, drum shoes are still good to go.

 

Woah for a second I thought you meant you JUST replaced them like for the first time..........

On my post above,, it was for the first time since new. 172K on the original front pads. I thought I got good mileage out of them, but someone on here did better than that.

 

OMFG, wait you got 172k miles off OEM original brake pads?

yessir!. My truck has had a easy life, so thats one of the reasons. Also just depends on how hard you use your brakes. I drive commercial truck for a living, and it is paramount to learn to conserve brake shoes/heat for the long downhills with 55 tons pushing you.

 

wait.............what.172 on the oe pads????really?i just cant see that at all.wow.

 

No doubt I think my truck has a easy life I'm always easy on the brakes except for twice, I pushed them to the floor to see how fast I could stop and what it felt like incase I would ever have to slam on them hard, had the finacee do the same thing.

 

aaaaaaaa that makes sence.i drive as well and i totally understand.just now teaching my daughter how to drive(on her permit with a 5 speed saturn and doing great)those things that come with driving commercial trucks.

 

yup, good luck with the daughter and the 5 speed, thats a bit of work there. she will definitely be a better driver.
