It was a bit of a joke, if you smelled burning smell, your clutch is done sorry.

Also the obvious... how well does it coast once moving? Get it on a road and see if it rolls without drag. That answer will eliminate a bunch of culprits.

    Good luck!

If you do drive it stop and see if any wheel it hot. Check it very lightly with a gentle quick pat so you don't get burned.

I smoked the clutch in my Jeep from getting stuck in the snow. Sounds very similar lol.

Yep, 4hi is terrible for those situations.

That's the thing. It drags when it's moving.

You made me remember something I tested the other night out. I tried to down shift 5th to 3rd from 50MPH without pressing any gas. The RPM drops like crazy. Shouldn't the RPM go up?

I too experienced some weird shi* when we got hammered here in Texas with all the snow. We had two snow dumps, during the first dump, I drove around town in 4H and kept it in 4H at the end of the day when I garaged BigBlue for the night. Every time I left the garage it seemed like the tires were frozen to the concrete. Rev it up a bit and ease up on the clutch and it would start to stall. Kinda started getting pissed coz I can't move forward so I shift it into reverse and BAM ! The tires broke loose and I was on my merry way. I too did smell a slight scent of something burning but there's no way it was the clutch (at least I hope not). During the 2nd dump, I put it back into 2H when I was done for the day and never had that "frozen tires to the concrete" ever again. It's been over a week since the storm and everything seems in order. Can somebody please explain.

Good lord, using 4hi isn't going to cause any damage. In fact for snow hi range is less likely to spin tires than lo range. Not saying the clutch isn't damaged, but it isn't because he was in high range. If you're stuck you're stuck. You reach a point where you come at it from a different angle. You need to dig it out. Repeatedly spinning wheels just overheats everything and causes more harm than good.

Question for you, if you don't mind. I know you drive a stick. What is the cost to replace the clutch, ballpark? Was just curious. I don't drive a stick but wanted to know if you had any experience with the cost to replace.

    :)

I honestly never had to replace a clutch in any of my vehicles. Not sure where you are, but in Canada it could be anywhere between 600-1200, depending on labour and parts.

    I respectfully disagree sir.

Do you drive a manual off road? Even backing up in 4hi will burn the clutch, you are at a big disadvantage. Give me any truck and I can burn the clutch in 4hi in under a minute, OP was stuck for 10hrs and was in 4hi trying to get out...

ATs have a torque multiplier, MTs torque multiplier is the transfer case.
