Jesus guys....calm down. Yea, he could have used a little thicker tubing, but he didn't. If you hit something hard enough to break that loose, even at it's current thickness, you've got bigger problems.

Just pay the 100 bucks for the Desert Does It ones... Or 180 for two sets. There should be no compromise if safety is even remotely questionable. It's really not that expensive.

Dude, your handle is pretty clever. I used the same style for my IG name Mawianpunch.

He can hit things as hard as he wants, it's not going to be a problem for me. One of things about a forum like this is that people who know something about a particular area try and share with others who don't. I appreciate that the OP likes the result, and I agree, there's only the slightest chance it would ever even be tested, but is it a chance worth taking? IMO, no, it's not. In a past job, I got to see a lot of vehicles that had been in accidents; the forces can be mind-boggling. I would not trust that set-up one iota. There's a lot to consider with this, not the least of which is the fact that the by elevating the seat, the force on the fasteners, and by extension, the vehicle body is amplified... just sayin'...

No. Yes, you got in a car crash and have that huge problem, but theres a huge difference between being in a car crash and being in a car crash with a cracked skull from hitting your head straight into the dash/steering wheel.

OP, I can't and wont tell you to take this off and spend $50 on some real ones. What I can tell you is what I know from personal experience of being on a motorcycle. A lot of guys like to take some risk while riding and dont wear helmets or back protection. I used to wear my helmet half of the time and not wear it the other half. When I had my accident I went head first into a KIA (I probably would have died if it were another car not made of cardboard). With my helmet I blacked out for a few seconds, I got a lot of cuts and I probably lost a couple IQ points, but without it I would have cracked my head open and I never would have even made it to this site. Just like I tell other riders that I would rather put on a helmet, Im going to tell you that if it were me I would take the precaution and take those off.

It's the rear ones. The seat belts are bolted to the cab.

OP has bigger problems than the tubing. Given the welded square tubing will break right at the weld as that will be a high stress area due to the 90 angle. Folks on here are trying to help as many of them have experience fabricating or in engineering.

I had to look those up. Those look well made versus the OP's rigged up contraption.

They're completely solid, probably a pound each. I have no doubt they offer at least very close to the same structure as the factory bolted position. Of course, anything that raises the seats increases torque on that junction in an accident.

Op, putting yourself at risk is up to you, we all do it, stuff we shouldn't. Letting your children drive it, putting them or anyone else who may drive it at risk is another thing. To each their own, but something to think about.

How do you know those won’t cause a problem? I’m guessing they haven’t done crash testing either.

Hah, I don't. But I can tell you unequivocally that they are far less likely to fail than this contraption. It's also because it uses the same hardware, so the only real difference is a slight increase in torque from the increased height. Every modification is going to make a difference but as has been said before here, you're comparing apples to chocolate covered breasts. Make your choice based on your comfort level.

Anything like this is a risk, but simply having a pair of functioning eyes and an iota of common sense will tell you which ones are more sturdy.

Comfort level is the key. Take a street bike as an example. Sure the thrill of such an extreme power to weigh ratio and hitting 65 before needing to shift is fantastic. Then throw in living in a big city with 90% of cars have a driver with their face in a phone. Thrill vs risk.

My comfort level is it’s ok to walk out the door not wearing a bubble wrap suit. It’s also ok to do 90mph on the highway. Someone else may insist on wearing a hard hat to go out to get the mail. Or only drive within the legal speed limit. To each their own. If the op is comfortable with what he built, it’s on him if he kills himself. We all have our opinions. My opinion is it should be removed because it’s not safe.

I’m not comparing anything to anything. Just pointing out that they all fall under the same category. All untested mods to a very important safety system.

Really? That’s cool thanks for the info. I was having trouble deciphering which one of the two would hold up better.
