I think the shark fin is only for satellite. Don't you have a regular antenna for radio?

didn't know that... I had lightning take out my radio and cb once in my old '69 bronco
I suppose it makes sense that welding current could zap an antenna

We have a Miller spoolgun here at work, while it does work the burn back can sometimes be frustrating with aluminum wire in it.

This! And I find welding thin aluminum difficult with a spool gun. Muuuch easier on 1/8” and thicker

Yes sir, very easy to burn a hole in thin aluminum with it.

I had to make 3 4’x8’ frames yesterday with my spool gun out of 3/4” square tubing. .060 wall and it wasn’t very fun lol

Whats the preferred way to weld thin aluminum? TIG?

Yeah, much more control/fine tuning to be had for thinner stuff

Yeah like they said above it's the only antenna. I was sort of kidding about the antenna. I don't think you could fry just the antenna with a ground on a welder, would probably fry the whole system. I'm changing it anyway. There will probably be a roof rack over that thing anyhow and then I will not have any reception. LOL
    Thanks
    Zim

I would not have liked TIG welding my boat!

I had little trouble with burn back once I had the settings dialed in.

You do need to haul ass!

You definitely have to weld it fast. Once you get it dialed in it is easier

I have the Miller 30A spool gun. I honestly am not impressed with the build quality and feel. I never thought it was worth the $1k or so I gave for it.
I would think those guns listed above would be fine. Technology has improved in 20 years.

AC tig to be more specific and your MM215 is DC tig only (I also have one and love it) so unless you have a separate tig machine the spool gun will be your only option.

I actually only have a little miller 141. But I'm taking notes for if I upgrade at some point. Thanks for the clarification!

Perhaps I missed a post elsewhere, but what's the cause of the dilemma? Why one vs the other?
